I'm looking to rebuild my 99 4g63 short block but not sure witch direction to go in. I'm looking to go slightly stronger then stock for smogging purposes. Where are good places I can find a Rebuild kit with out paying more then what the car is worth. I've never done this before so I'm not sure where to start do I need to get the block machined before I get a piston size and how strong can I go before it starts dramatically effecting smog since I'm n California. Any info is appreciated
 
Maybe in the 300 range really I just want strong enough internals to run higher boost. How do I go about getting the right size rings after getting the blocked machined
 
Read up on the stock block hp capabilities before you go blow your wad on internals. 300hp is a cake walk for the 4g63 in stock form.

It will be just as reliable as with $1500 internals and only running 300 hp. Dont fix what's not broken. Buy a clutch instead, your gonna need one around that hp mark.

And that last post ^^^^ means you should maybe start tinkering with lawn mowers or something of the sort till you figure it out. When you take a motor to a machine shop and bore it out like you've stated you want done, you don't get larger rings to accomodate the bore. You get larger pistons AND rings, which they come together in the same box.
 
People have out down 600hp on a stock bottom end. Just get a good head gasket and head studs and you can run over 30psi no problem.

LOL hahaha. Yea, OP, he got ya. The rings and pistons come as sets in different sizes. For a 4g63 should be 85mm, 85.5, and 86mm or stock, .020 over, and .040 over. Theres a .060 over too i think but im not sure. I wouldnt go that high on my block, id just find a used one. TMI, i know but now you know
 
im only rebuilding my bottom end because i have metal shavings in the oil, but if i can put down my hp goal on stock internals il stick with that, and as for the pistons and rings i wasnt sure if getting the cylinders honed would make me need bigger pistons. but where can i get a stock rebuild kit, i can get one from pick n pull for $120 oppose to buying questionable one for $1200 if i can find a reliable kit il have a shop do the rest
 
First the engine needs to come out and apart to figure where the metal shavings came from.

For $120 you may want to go ahead and grab up that other short block from the salvage yard.

If you spun a rod bearing , you will spend almost that much for a decent core crank.

For smog, your tune will affect that more than what rods and pistons in the block.
 
Ok well now that makes more sense. Thats like the 9th thread today that starts with half the info given.

But like stated above, you need to tear down to the bare block before you order anything and inspect everything.

Then take the block/crank to the machine shop and they will check it out for you, decide whether or not you have to bore it out. Then they will recommend xxx parts and yyyy gaskets. They will also gap the rings for you if you have the parts there during the bore or hone.
 
i idint spin a rod bearing i still the drive the car it has no problems at all, i did a oil change and i check it daily for shavings nothing yet so i think it was from a slight amount of lifter tick i had. but thanks for the info. after i pull the block im going to take it to the shop to see how good/bad it is
 
my main question still hasnt been answered LOL which was "where can i buy a reliable engine rebuild kit"
 
its been a while since ive had to do any rebuilds. I could be wrong, but in my shade tree experience, there really arent any rebuild "kits." usually you work with your machinist and he either tells you what he needs, or orders for you. you need to know sizes. if all you need is a hone job then you should be good with a new set of stock sized rings. if you need to over bore, to straighten the cylinder out, then you have options for how far you want to over bore the cylinder. overboring leads to bigger pistons and the rings have to be purchased to match. same kind of thing goes for the crank. if all the crank needs is polishing, then your machinist may advise you to get some stock sized main and rod bearings. If the crank needs to be turned down a size, then he will tell which size bearings he needs.. you only fix what you need to. Then at this point you should be able to pick up a crankcase kit for all of the gaskets and such. It sounds like your current short block is ok. Maybe for the time being you can pick up another short block and begin building it. during the rebuild is when i like to try some things like add some stronger rod bolts if possible for a little added insurance.
 
The most straight forward answer iv got so far LOL thanks that answered my question, il probably go get the motors they have at pick n pull just because there so cheap and il build them up in time so if the one i have now decides to die i wont be carless
 
It also depends on what brand of parts you want.

I use mainly King engine bearings, but ACL and Clevite bearings are good too.
