All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

more like a whistle winning
also its progressive it gets louder with the rpm's

nope checked that holds steady preassure so i dont think thats the problem

so it could be just a natural noise after a rebuild----new everything----- cept crank n rods didnt hear it after i replaced the first timming belt or water pump way b4 the rebuild (was worryd about timming belt breakage when i put the 2.0 in) so its kinda wierd if ya ask me

nope both good it doesnt sound like it hurting anything just wondering what is causing it

ok actualy got out n looked at and drove today its none of the above but it is however coming from the trans its also getting alot louder in third gear so im thinkin maybe that its low on gear oil could this b a possibility???

yes that is a possibility.
I would also get a piece of 3ft hose to listen to the other suspected parts.
They sell automotive stethoscopes too.

I have a rebuilt engine that i put into a 90 eagle talon tsi. Its bored 20 over with ross pistons and manley rods. After i put the engine in it started good and all but now its sounds like if there is a spun bearing or bad lifter. I did a little research on my problem that im having. its sounds like this.... (not my engine just found it on the forum and posted it with my since it sounds like mine) Im going to check if the timing is correct i pulled the oil pan off but no metal pieces were on the oil pan.. Any thoughts ?!?!?

hmm, sounds like really loud lifter tick. Are the lifters new or are they the old ones? If new did you prime them properly before installing them? I've read that not priming them could cause them to sound like that.

ok i know what it is the tranny had no gear oil in it put redline in and its slowly goin away its also ratlin a lil bit i think my tob is the cause for that though when i press the clutch the rattle goes away oh well it was time for a new clutch anyways

They were the old ones. Im thinking its because i didn't have the proper amount of oil in there. But I also think it could be the timing..

Did you bleed the lifters when you put them back in?

If you think its a spun bearing (doesnt sound like it, spun bearings would follow the RPM band) then pull each plug wire 1 by 1. If the noise goes away or gets noticably quieter, theres your spun bearing.

I didnt bleed them. And you are right when i start to accelerate the engine it starts to stop hearing the noise! At first when I first started the engine it didn't sound like this though why would it cause it now?!? And I will pull each wire 1 by 1 as soon as theres day light.

I checked timing and its dead on. When i move the crankshaft it seems like the flywheel came loose. I am just going to take the engine out and see whats going on!

i recently got my car back from my mechanic about 2 weeks ago,i had to change the head gasket and also had the head rebuilt.WEll this is my problem around 2000RPMs it starts to make a grinding noise around the intake manifold it sounds like a grinder going off. could it be my lifters?

is the sound coming from the head or under the intake manifold? if its coming from under the intake it could be your starter isn't fully disengaged. that was a problem I ran into when I rebuilt my engine. I had to use washers to move the starter back alittle. problem solved.

I have a grinding like noise(sounds kinda like a bad bearing) coming from what i thought was the A/C compressor. Well i removed the belt and its still there, it's coming from around the compressor area but I can't figure out where it is coming from. Any ideas?

I'll also add that it goes away when the RPMs increase
