After car sits overnight, few times a week starts up and makes noise like a playing card in spokes of bicycle. Goes away after 3 to 5 minutes or shut down car and restart. Seems to be coming from center of timing belt cover, kinda muffled like coming from behind it. Car is 93 talon n/t 2.0, only had 2 months and fixed about 5 or 10 noises already and this one is hard because it only happens occasionally. Engine has 92000 miles belt was changed at 60000 but dont know if anything else replaced

Took apart front part of motor all belts and timing chain cover looking for clue of something rubbing on any part like belt cover. Cant find sign of anything hitting yet.

You need to pull the belt off and replace the tensioner or reset it. If the tensioner is bad the rocking arm will tap on the tensioner body and cause that noise. Even if the tensioner is good if you set it too tight it will do the same thing.

This happened to me and luckily i keep everything tight and had a new unstreched belt...the tapping went on for a while and eventually allowed the timing belt to touch a bolt head and rub a groove in it.

Agreed. Make sure that all belts are tight and that all tentioners are up to par. Alot of shops will just do the belt and leave the old tensioner in there. Thats a NO-NO and may be causing your problem.

PS. Make sure that the actual pulleys are not rubbing on anything.

When I did the belt on a 2G GST. I had the T belt tensioner setup titties and beer, so I thought. When I pulled the pin the belt put tension on it and the lip of the puley was rubbing just slightly on the bottom of the water pump and making a tiny grinding/squelling noise. Make sure NOTHING is touching that shouldnt be.

OK Ready to check tensioner, might change out belts and tensioners. Have to get busy under hood. Thanks for help.

didnt get anything accomplished...went to part stores all day... stud on tire broke when taking off tire...seal on drive axle is ripped... rubber cover on ball joints ripped...messed up taking apart to put on axle....nothing done there....
couldnt figure out what the hell anyone was talking about with the tensioner so i went to see a friend who has an eagle and a good motor head...so he explained everything to me...and took me for a ride in his slightly modified 93 turbo talon :talon: .... scared the shit out of me...realllllly fast car..... OMG
looked at motor and figured out that the tensioner arm is hitting the tensioner. so it is either broke or not put in right...
now i know whats wrong lets hope tomorrow is a better day

With this car, the only law you must consistently try to break is Murphy's. ;)

Tomorrow is always a better day in times like these, because you are one day closer to driving your DSM. :dsm:

So far managed to replace drive axle, ball joint,(needed a press),and got b-belt in..Have got wrong part for driver side motor mount, bennet gave me a front center one and said the one i need is for a 92,have it on order from dealer now also got wrong t-belt auto-tensioner has both mounting holes on right side need one with holes onboth sides, have one on order but dealer doesnt know which one will get. Also broke bolt tightening tensioner arm down had heart attack but was easy to fix. Hope new water pump isnt leaking. What a vacation!
