I removed my engine with the tranny still in the car. I had to remove all the pullies etc. before I could pull it.

I know that it will not go back in with the tranny still in the car. I was wondering if anyone had loosened the tranny and tilted it up in order to drop the engine in. Also, would I need to remove the axles to be able to tilt it?

I don't want to totally remove the tranny if possible.

Anyway, I have searched this topic and have not read anything about tiling the tranny.

Thanks A Lot

It is PITA to do it but you can do it. Use a floor jack with a block of wood to lift the bellhousing end of the tranny. You should not have to take the axles out and on a 1g there is only one mount left holding it on after the motor came out. If it is a 2g you will need to loosen the mounts. Any more ??? just ask.

it is going to be more headache than benefit to do it with the trans still in the car.
your going to need a couple buddies to help guide it in and line it up with the trans and mounts

I have a 95 eagle talon tsi. thanks for the responses so far. I am wondering if anyone out there has done this.

I have done it about 6 times different ways. From now on I will always pull the tranny as well. Those last couple of bolts holding it in are worth the effort to pull it out IMO.And I always did it without help.

For future reference, I never post without firsthand experience.

thanks a lot.

I am just going to pull the tranny and just drop the whole thing in. I appreciate your help.

We've pulled engines/trannys every way possible.

We've pulled the engine and left the tranny in with the axles still hoked up. That was a big PITA.

The easiest way way to drop the driveshaft and pull the half shafts and lift the engine and trannt out still connected. It does some out together. It just needs to be tilted at an angle with the front cover up and the tranny down. Transdapt makes a pretty nifty tool called the "Engine Tilter" which is used in conjenction with a cherry picker, and it makes the process much easier.
