I bought a project 95 eclipse gs a couple of weeks back and the guy i bought the car off of said the motor was blown. The car drives fine, idle is a little rough, but after about a minute or so it will idle a lil under 1k without problems. I've taken a head off of a previous eclipse so i know a little bit about the cars.
There is a knocking, clicking noise on the driver side part of the head. If you set ## hand on the valve cover and give it gas, you can feel the problem almost like something is close to hitting the cover. The weird thing is that it only really happens in mid to high rpms in 1st gear (really loud) maybe 2nd too, but once i am in higher gears with more torque it runs like it doesn't have a problem.. A buddy of mine thought that a valve spring might have broke. We took the valve cover off the other day and inspected it and really couldnt see any problems. I checked all the springs and didnt really see anything broken but then again they are compressed so it could be hard to tell. My dad thinks it could be a camshaft problem, but im not too sure. Any suggestions of what might be going on??

I do have another head sitting at my house that i am contemplating putting on, but i want to find out the problem first and if replacing the head will fix the problem.

Well hopefully you are going to replace the timing belt and related components soon anyway (right? :D), so that would be a good time to check that the cams rotate freely and that the lifters are in good shape (might as well replace those while you are at it with the revised 3G lifters... noisy lifters similar to what you describe are a common problem).

And since you will have the front torn apart for the T-belt job, it's also a good time to drop the pan and check the bottom end for any issues, and replace all those leaking front cover gaskets and seals. ;)

Edit:

eh... wait. Just realized you are NT...Does the 3G lifter fix still apply? :hmm:

I was planning on replacing the cams and the timing belt as well because I have the cams from the other head still and the belt is getting worn.
