Egr?

Was thinking about the EGR block off kit for my 96 Eclipse GS. I read one post about it and was thinking about it and only cost $15. But my concerns where really not addressed in the thread.

Some one said that it makes your car less fuel efficient. Is this true.

The site with the block off kit says it makes your intake filthy and I think this is true because when I had taken my intake off the inside was covered with black and the EGR tube was clogged with some black stuff.

the EGR system is "Exhaust Gas Recirculation" it takes Exhaust coming out of your cylinders before it reaches the manifold and puts it back through the intake the black that you are seeing is most likely soot if it was oil meaning you have bad rings it would be obvious that it is oil. Deleting with will ensure that you have clean air going into your intake the only issue that you might run into with this is it can make the car a little harder to start in really cold environments, doing this will also make your emissions going into the environment bad I'm not no tree hugger so who cares, as for fuel efficiency your vehicle will run more efficient because it is burning cleaner air, more bang for your buck.

I didn't notice oil when I had it apart. But I am losing oil somewhere which I do think I am burning oil cause I don't drip. But no tree hugger either so it looks like a good cheap mod to do.

Didn't notice a difference in my car. Just a cleaner engine bay. I was also told about reduced gas mileage during part throttle conditions but again, I just did the mod and never payed attention to the difference in mileage.

The kit really won't do much but make keep your intake cleaner. It would make it a tiny bit more fuel efficient due to the fact that it is putting a small amout of already burn't air/fuel mixture from your exhaust side back into the intake. This already burnt mixture is not combustible so it is basically wasting space in your cylinder. Removing it will make it so ONLY fresh air/fuel mixture will go into the cylinder and thus make a minutely stronger power stroke.

OP, this a easy free/cheap mod. The only thing is you have to be willing to live with the CEL on, unless you use a jumper. The jumper portion is floating around somewhere here or 2gnt.com(i forget where, possibly both) just search for it. As far as less gas efficient, I still get 30 mpg highway so its not enough to worry about.

I would want to jump it because my goal right now is to get the CEL off. What do I need to look up. I've already tried EGR Jumper with no luck on both sites.

The egr cel is related to the egr control solenoid or the wiring to the solenoid.

Another reason for the EGR is when you are running hard (WOT) your combustion gets hotter and also creates NO3 I believe it is and when exhaust is recirculated it cools the combustion down a bit. It's more an emissions regulation.

I had to replace EGR & solenoid in my 97GS otherwise I had hard time starting when really cold out.
