Not sure where to post this..So I have am going to college next year for a program called "motor vehicle body repairer and painter. They teach me about interior and exterior repairs and I want a head start before next september. Has anyone taking this and have any suggestions, or helpfully pieces of advice? Or links to sites that will get me on my way?

Best way to learn, well I think... look through the brochure and find out what you are actually going to do. Some things you may know some you may not. But go on Craigslist or somewhere local and pickup a cheap running car with a not so pleasant body. And practice. The can only teach you so much with texts and words. This probably won't answer your question hut its just a piece of adcise. Good luck with college! I'm going through bell in it right now:)

Haha thanks man, I plan on that, but I wanna get to know at Least the terminology and stuff. I never put ever into school, so now I wanna do good since it's college

Like most fields, terminology etc. is something that they'll put a lot of emphasis on when you start, so I wouldn't be too worried about that, although it's always fun to have a head start, sometime it may be boring if you get there and the first months you're bored cause they're just going over everything you already know and studied for other class mates who aren't so educated in the field. Just my 0.02

If you really want to learn best bet would be to try and get a very basic job in the field, even if you're doing it for free once or twice a week, it's still the best way to learn.

Go on youtube, there are tons of videos on there that show what to do. They won't get to in depth with what they did bacause they don't want EVERYBODY doing it. They would lose money.
There are books that you can order online on "how to paint your car".

I would spend a lot of time on google and read read read. Then if your confident enough try it out on your car. I know it takes me only about $250 to paint a car. Thats two stage with a good deal on paint.

Do you have a friend that has a hoop-D? Ask him if you can try a couple of things.

IMO I think you should become familiar with the tools and technical terms first. Reason being is there are a million different ways to paint and a few different types of paint even that require different techniques so if you start to learn one way they could teach a totally different way. Go to a auto paint store and learn about the different tools and ask abou the different types of paint and primers... also when your done get back on here and teach us some tips for the love of god!

We don't have much where I live store wise so I'm stuck with mail ordering and googling for sure. When I get the tech terms and stuff dialed I'm sure I'll find the course a breeze. We get to work on our own cars (if we want.. There are sober cars).

We have a huge private garage and we all get to paint cars, redu interiors Weld. Bassically everything to restore a car that isn't machanical like engine work. Lol I just wanna find a forum for guys who have the skills that share some knowledge with other guys who have the skill. So I can start reading on the stuff they use

Lmao what is a hoop d. Like a rough car? I'm Gunna buy a jeep this summer for next winter, and I wanna get a paint gun. I have a compressor and a garage with paint bay. I do plan on using all of my resources to get started. I have no welding knowledge. And I understand how painting works. I'll proabably try and get my school books earlier then the course and read them a few times over.

Thanks alot everyone so far. I guess all I really need is for someone who has already taken a similar course to shed some light on it.

How often were you in a class
How much work on cars did you actually do
Did the exams feel more tough since you weren't as into the paper work as the actual work?
Was it fun? Would ya do it again? Lol personal experiences and storys LOL.

I wanna do great in the course and I wanna do great work on cars when I'm done. Mitsubishi here and ford here have both personally told me I can work for them and get my apprentice hours through them, and possibly keep a career with them. (conveying but in three years I want my own shop)

Haha you know as well as I do that new brunswick doesn't have a large field of employment to the uneducated and this is a hard time of the year to find any work. I handed out fifty resumes last week and got one interview, I am still trying, going to the same places twice even. Calling people back and introducing myself to managers. I guess I'm stuck at the bars bartending
