My 1990 Eclipse gsx just had the ecu burn up, one of the capacitors has burnt a hole in the board, so I figure that I am going to need a new ecu. Does it matter what ecu I get for it, I figure I could use any 1g 1990 turbo awd ecu. Am I correct?

Steve, so you are saying that I can use a FWD Turbo ecu in my car? I have found one with new caps.

not Steve, but....Yes, any Turbo 1990 ECU will work in your car. No difference betw. fwd and awd. :thumb:

Maybe I missed it or its been an unspoken thing the whole thread but what about Automatic and Manual transmission? I'm looking for an ecu for my 92 eclipse GS but have always been sure that it was from a 5-speed,the way this thread is written,it does not matter.....so does it?

There is a guy on ebay selling rebuilt, tested and guaranteed to work ECU's or you can return it for a full refund. He charges $300 but if you send him your old one as a core he'll send you back $100.Still ends up being $200 but its another option other than local parts stores.I will NOT buy a used one from anyone unless its got some kind of guarantee on it,"it worked fine when pulled from the car" doesn't do it for me no matter how cheap it is.

The way I understand this is that it is okay to use a manual trans ECU in an Automatic car, and vice versa (to an extent). The only difference that I am aware of between the two, as far as the ECU would be concerned, is the fuel injectors (automatics having smaller injectors). I believe that some people who drive automatics will purposefully switch out their ECU to a manual trans. unit so that they can run the stock 450cc injectors.

Someone please let me know if I'm leaving something out here. But this is the way I understand it ;)

Since we have been talking about '90 model year cars that issue is mute, they weren't any turbo automatics in 1990.

Yes, it makes a difference on 1Gs. You need to use a ECU that matches your trans type or do the corrections for the injectors. There are other differences but this is the important one as far as engine health.

That's my friend Val who runs MotorGuys Garage.
Guess where he learned how and where he sends them when he can't figure out what's wrong.

Steve,
was the information I posted above completely inaccurate, then? I certainly don't want to spread incorrect information. What I meant by my post was that people who have 91-94 turbo automatic cars can switch out their ECU with a manual trans unit if they want to upgrade to the 450cc injectors.

Is that right? Now I'm curious.

A-HA ! I was not aware of that about the 90 model year but I have seen the light, thank you.

I've told several people about the ECU's on ebay and thank you for showin him how to fix them.

That's what I thought you ment. It's the second part that's not such a good idea. Putting a automatic ECU in a manual even if you change the injectors. It will run but you'll have performance issues compared to staying with the 450 injectors and a manual ECU.
