ECU questions regaurding Emissions/OBDII

OK, i have the problem that everyone keeps talking about. Not passin smog due to 3 monitors/OBDII not being ready. So i want to eliminate this problem all together. I was thinking of taking the advice of a fellow tuner on here and replacing my 97ecu with that of a 99 ecu. Supposedly this will solve the problem because the 99 ecu is fixed from whatever causes us not to pass. Then i also hear that you can use a 95 eprom ecu and it will also eliminate the problem because the 96-98's ecu's are affected. If i find an ECU out of a 99 gst spyder, is it swapable and will work fine? I have a friend that is willing to swap with me for the test but i just wanted to verify. Any assistance would be appreciated.

ECU's should be swappable. When I was looking for a DSMLink they said the 95 ecus would work with every 2G application. So, it should work vise-versa. As long is its from a 2G. FWD, AWD, Manual, Auto...doesnt matter especially sinces its going to be a temporary thing. Good luck!

It's not that the monitors need reset, it's that the monitors won't set and even performing the Mitsu recommended drive cycles won't set them. Even if the drive cycles do set, as soon as you turn off the car they will reset themselves. Once they are set, they are supposed to remain set until the ECU looses power.

Satan will charge you up to $200 for them to reset your monitors, and for what....to last you a smog test?

I had done this and passed my car (a 98 GSX) using an ECU of a 99 GST on my last smog at a Test Only Center (I have the smog paperwork to prove this, before and after). I had failed and went to the dealer straight from the center, they refused to help me. I was told by a DSM Tech that this problem is random and not inherent to all Eclipses. The ECUs affected are from the 96-98 model years.

What Eclipse owners should do is band together and demand a resolution from Mitsubishi Motors of America. By law, they cannot sell non-smog compliant cars, especially in California where smog is at strictest. Either they provide a fix or provide the reset service for free.

I also am considering the 95 EPROM and installing DSMLink on it since it reverts to OBDII when needed.

Mine was $123.00. They don't reset the monitors, they hook up to the ECU with a MUT-II and force the monitors into the readiness state. Then they can run it through the emissions machine. Sounds a little fishy to me .

I have read about people contacting their state emissions boards and explaining the problems. Normally the emissions board is aware of the problem, but isn't putting any pressure on Mitsubishi to solve the problem. Go figure
