Ok guys I have an 1997 eclipse RS that is an automatic. I don't want to go out and buy a whole new car so I was going to take the car to the shop and have it converted over to a manual for like 2.5K instead of dropin an extra 3-4K on another car. Only problem I have with the RS is that it it's an automatic. I was wondering if If that was possible with the innards in my car engine and what not. I have the 2.0L DOHC. Im guna post a pic to illustrate something since I dun have any batteries for my camrea "NOTE THIS IS NOT MY CARS ENGINE JUST TO ILLUSTRATE" let me know what you think. The gears in this pic are on the right side and mine are on the left I dun know if that matters or not. Im new to modding cars so im learning what I can so any help would be great im not sure if it really even matters what side they are on LOL.

I don't understand how so many people posted NOT answering the question... (Of course with the exception of Locke). Either people keep telling him to sell his car, Which he doesn't want to do or look for a 6-bolt 4g63 with an added "this conversion is expensive"... He's not trying to swap to a 4g63!, He stated that he doesn't know cars, this is not his actual engine or even what his engine bay looks like, he doesn't mind spending the money, and all he wanted to know was is it possible. he even stated that his gears are on the opposite side, which means he has a 420a motor and realizes this, just didn't know the name or anything.

Follow Locke's link Eclipse37, the conversion isn't that bad and yes it is possible to switch... hope you didn't get too discouraged with all the posts.

Thank you mate btw isn't the GST almost the same car as the RS but it is manual? Or bigger engine? I mean it practically looks like the same car to me on the outside. Probably not on the inside tho.

The RS comes in a manual as well as the GS (GS and RS are both non-turbo 420a motors). The GST and GSX are the turbo models with a whole different engine in it (4g63). A lot of the interior parts and exterior parts are compatible. The engine, however, is not.

The picture on top is the 4g63 motor and the picture below is the 420a motor. The difference is more than one just the turbo from the factory, the engines are mirrored of one another.

Aaah ok I get it now. So the only difference between the 420a and 4g63 engine are the 420a is the non turbo and the 4g63 the the turbo model?

Not really, as stated above, 420a has cam timing gear on the passenger side, 4g63 on the driver side. While both displace 2.0L, the 4g63 is a Mitsubishi made motor, while the 420a is a Chrysler mill. Also, the 4g63 came in mostly turbocharged variations, save for the 1g 2.0 non turbos, whereas there was never any turbocharged version of the 420a from the factory. In short, they are two completely different motors.

Yes, because

a) it has a stronger bottom end in stock form
b) there is a plethora of after market parts
c) it already has the turbo

Fully built they have about the same potential, the difference is the cost of getting there.

Aaah of I get it now ty ty well I have learned alot in the little time ive been at this site. I have a nuclear plant outage to do in aug so I will be makin alot of money, so im guna get a cheap GSX and work on it. Hopefully soon after that I will have a 350 HP car :D
