I have a 95 eclipse gsx with a 98 engine, heres my problem
I finally got it running again after rewiring the fuel pump and soldering some bad wires to the ecu, it started up fine and i shut it down.. but then after i put my new MPI/FP relay back in, the car would not crank at all, even if i put the old one back it still wont crank.

When i turn the key to start all my lights come on all the relays are working/clicking and also have a new starter as well. Now the fuel pump doesnt turn on right away sometimes. I would have to hold the key and the MPI/FP relay will start going crazy clicking a bunch of times and then the fuel pump turns on but i cant figure out why the engine wont crank.

Just a few minutes ago it was running fine, ever since i swapped out the MPI/FP relay.. no engine crank. Any ideas please let me know im stumped

I have checked the obvious things, battery, starter/wires/ground (new starter), and every fuse but i dont see how it could be any of those if all i did was swap out the relay, it started right before i did that

sounds like a bad ground on the new fuel pump relay, and if its not cranking sounds like another ground. i had same problems so i installed my own relays for ignition.

ok ill check over everything again tomorrow, ive been checking the wiring over and over all day trying to figure it out and everything seems to be good and grounds fine. What did you do to your ignition switch? i did have a problem starting the car when i bought it, one time i had to turn the key a bunch of times to get it to crank, but it wont let me do that now LOL.

If anyone else had a similar problem please let me know. been trying to get my car on the road for 2 weeks and right after something is fixed i keep getting different problems coming up. :toobad:

Double check the ground on the starter. If not pull the starter relay that is behind the radio and use a jumper from one of the red/black wires to the yellow in the harness connector. That is basically bypassing the starter relay.

i have checked the starter wires and ground to it.. ya that was a problem i had before LOL, it is also a brand new starter that i replaced about a week ago because when i bought the car the timing belt was ruined so i did the whole timing belt kit and it would crank but not start, So at that point i replaced the starter it started up fine, but that was with bypassing the fuel pump relay. So then i rewired the fuel pump and fixed up and soldered the ECU wires that were all cut up and not soldered and it was all good and the car started up on its own without bypassing the fuel pump relay Untill i put in the new fuel pump relay, (and yes same relay.. same model #) just a minute after i shut the car off.. then the relay would click numerous times going crazy, letting the fuel pump turn on after holding the key on start position, sometimes will turn right on , (did not do that before) and the engine wouldnt crank

and i will try bypassing the starter see what happens tomorow, will update after i mess with everything once again LOL, im starting a new job monday so im getting nervous :p

Note- the relay im talking about is the MPI/FP relay combined, i think in different year model GSX's they are separated so the fuel pump relay is not by itself if that makes any difference so nobody is confused

yea the ecu seems to be powering everything fine just the MPI/FP is clicking alot and have to hold the key at start posistion to get the FP to turn on, sometimes the FP turns right on . and i have used the new relay to start the car before and it worked fine, all i did is start the car and shut it off and put in the new relay. then it wouldnt crank, if i put in the old relay it does the same thing, no crank

So the ECU and MPI relay have nothing to so with the starter not cranking the engine. They don't have to be in the car for the starter to work, running is a different story...

First make sure your battery is fully charged.

Find a helper and your voltmeter, go check the voltage going to the spade plug for the solenoid on the starter while the ignition is in the START position.

If your not getting 12v to activate the starter solenoid then it's time to work backward to the ignition switch. If you are, then the problem is with the starter, it's main battery connection, or the grounding.

battery is fully charged, solenoid is getting 12v, ground and main connection to the starter is nice and tight, i took out the starter relay too and jumped it (black/red to black/yellow) but didnt work, also tried this is ignition switch fix as well but didnt work- http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/electrical-tech/420747-ignition-switch-electrical-fix.html

also the MPI/FP relay isnt messing up anymore so the FP is working properly again, it was infact a bad ground. still stumped on getting it to crank :/

Update- Put another new starter in today since its under warranty and after taking out the old one and testing it wasn't spinning. New one still wouldn't get the engine to crank. Any other ideas guys?I supposed to start my new job tomorrow and would hate to tell my boss my car isn't ready :(

wired in a push button switch with relay and still no luck :banghead: Please help me if you have anymore ideas

Has to be a bad ground or missing ground. Like said already. the ECU isn't required to make the engine crank. You said you tried to check the voltage at the starter with the engine cranking and you see 12V? Well if that's the case, you need to have a solid ground from the other terminal. There should be ground wire running to the tranny block, make sure it's connect, intact, and free of corrosion. You can make sure of this by connecting an ohm meter from the negative terminal of the starter to the negative battery terminal, you should be less than 0.5 ohms

ok i just checked it i have 0.3 ohms from negative battery terminal to negative starter terminal, my ground is from the negative battery terminal to the outside of the starter bolt. (not on the starter itself.. the bolt that holds the starter in place) and it is also a brand new wire with new connectors. later when i have someone to crank the engine for me (well even though technically it doesn't crank hehe) i will check the voltage to the positive at the starter again since the push button was just put in make sure it still has enough voltage

today i just tried to put 12v to the starter from the battery + to a switch and to the selonoid and still just clicks, wont spin. so i guess ill bring that starter back to autozone after i piss on there floor and get a real starter LOL. screw autozone idk why i bought it there in the first place, there starters are junk

got it running today :hellyeah:, i put in a new bosch starter and it started right up

also next time anyone needs a new starter dont get a dura-not-last at autozone, this bosch starter is $104 new with warranty and free shipping (costs $189 at NAPA)

extra 30 bucks more i'd say it will be well worth it in the long run
