Ok so I am sure I am asking for it but hey here is the scoop.
I messed my stock crank pulley up & now i need a new one & found this beaut here, question is are these ok to use or not really? if not does any one have any recomendations? i am on a budget so this of course seemed appealing.
thanks

I also have to do the timing & this is cheaper than I found as well

I would skip on both of those. Get a name brand UDP, not a cheap eBay one.

Also, I wouldn't get my timing components from eBay. Too important of parts to skimp out on. I would maybe go to the dealership to see how much they cost from them directly.

Someone, I'm sure, will post the best locations to get both of these as I have not had to replace them before.

Agreed. If you're going to shop on eBay for a UDP, try finding an AFX or Unorthodox. I don't think I would go with some generic shit. These are a press fit installation, so ghetto fab on the collar that presses over the crank could result in frequent pulley failure.

Cool thanks for the input guys I think I will sleep better if i get better parts. thanks again

Rule of thumb.....be very very very careful about buying moving parts from ebay.

Totally off subject (mods feel free to edit if you feel the need later).....but do you guys know where the phrase "rule of thumb" came from?

It comes from a time when it was acceptable to beat ones wife in the world. The rule was you wasn't acceptable to beat her with anything wider than the width of your thumb........don't beat your wives period!!!! but I just wanted to show you guys what my tuition dollors at University are teaching me in english class...

Anyways back to the technical stuff.

Well I just got some timing components from Parts Dinosaur on Ebay and they're a very good seller (Timing Belt, Idler bearing, mechanical tensioner, MLS HG and Head bolts). They were actually recommended to me by Paul. Bruce at Parts Dinosaur is a very knowledgeable guy and his parts are great.

But as far as the UDP goes I would not go the Ebay route though, try Unorthodox or AF/X.

Parts Dinosaur has a website you can buy from as well. They are not a strictly ebay company like a lot of people are on there. But yes, Parts Dinosaur is a great place to get parts for your car.

Dang, that sucks you had to go to college to figure that out, I learned that while watching the Boondock Saints, LOL. :thumb:

has anyone tried a obx udp? or are they no good either ? i was just wondering because i dont really want to pay 140 for this pulley and wait forever to get it from howell, when i can get the same thing for 60 minus the belts.. ive been waiting for a thread like this to ask:)

Exactly what I was thinking! I'm glad somebody else has seen that movie...Anyways, AF/x is the way to go man. I don't think I'd trust the OBX underdrive pulley, it's not exactly a big brand name when it comes to well-put-together-parts. Some of their stuff isn't bad, but I wouldn't trust a crank pulley from them. Just my .02

They take forever for parts they have to special order. The UDP they supposedly always have in stock and it won't take very long to recieve at all. Oh, and you get another pulley you will need to test and try and see what belts it needs. The pulley uses different belts because of the smaller diameter. I have the stock #'s for the AFX unit but for anything else I wouldn't know. AFX is just about the best way to go because of all of the actual usage people have with these. A no name could use lower quality parts and possibly not even fit the car correctly causing you to go through belts like crazy. Trust me one time doing this is going to be enough for you. Just do it the right way the first time. If you call howell and order you WILL get a faster response and shipping time because you are dealing directly with a support member. Good luck though :thumb:

Exactly. Plus the AF/X pulley comes with the belts that are needed instead of trying to measure how big of a belt you would need, although there has been some speculation as to whether the belts sent with the pulley are actually still a size too big or not. I guess it depends on your tensioners and how well you can tighten them. If they're too big I guess a simple trip to your nearest auto parts store to buy the next size smaller belt would be a good idea. Beats the hell out of throwing belts all the time.

Just two thoughts to add here...

I recently helped someone on the forums do a timing belt/headgasket change. He had an eBay UDP on his crank, and after I removed the crank bolt, the pulley came right off... no puller necessary. He said the PS/AC belt has fallen off numerous times in the past few months.

Also, I have the AF/X pulley on my car, and it did indeed come with the wrong size PS/AC belt. The alternator belt was fine, but the PS/AC belt was much too long.

Thanks a lot Paul. I pretty much didn't think twice about spending the extra money for the AF/X pulley when I ordered mine, and after that story I'm glad I didn't think ebay. Do you recommend getting a new belt that is one size smaller, or should I see if my tensioners will tighten enough for the supplied belt to work?

Giving the included belt a try couldn't hurt, but a new belt isn't expensive. Just take the old belt to Advance or AutoZone and ask for it one size smaller. I know the guys there usually aren't too sharp, but they should at least be able to do that much.

Haha I know what you mean. I've been cluelessly stared at by employees before, especially when describing something that is so simple to explain yet so complex for them that their brain overworks itself trying to figure out what part I'm talking about. It really makes auto parts store employees dumbfounded when a customer knows more about cars then they do. But anyways, I'll give the old belt a try like you said, but if all else fails I'll just throw down a couple bucks and buy a new one. Thanks.
