The smell lasts only a short time and those pads are the stock sound deadening. The ones that are planted with near 100% of their surface area are probably fine - leave them. But if any are just kinda slapped on etc go ahead and peel 'em off. They're not helping much.

When I did this project I took out all of the carpet padding and replaced it with new stuff from the local home carpet store. As for the smell, it did stink pretty badly when I was doing the spraying (which was with Duplicolor Rubberized Undercoat Spray and NOT Herculiner), but after reinstalling my new black painted carpet along with new seats the smell was not very strong at all. Within the next 3 to 4 days the smell was completely gone.
Now that I think about it... i kinda miss that smell. It's almost like "new car" smell.
