Richmond Hill,
Is it possible to have 2 intercoolers in your car, one that is mounted in the front, and another mounted behind the passenger side wheel and have them connected? This is on a 92 talon turbo.

A. I ran 12.6 on 2 smic's welded together like a fmic....on race gas and 450s, no fuel control....first pass down a 1/4 ever

B. Twin sidemounts works fine if your can do the work yourself. Otherwise the cost/benefit ratio isn't great.

I may sound silly but I was wondering if there was such a thing as a duel stage intercooler
Basicly having a FMIC tieing into the stock SMIC then back to the head ? Would there be much turbo lag? Would the air even be cooler than normal?

:talon:

The main issue you have there would be the pressure drop. The stock IC is a little restrictive and you lose some of your boost pressure = pressure drop. A fmic is a little less restrictive, therefore less pressure drop. So putting the two in line with each other you may gain a little cooling efficiency, but you have more pressure drop than if you had just the stock IC.

So generally this is not done. :thumb:

Been discussed several times.

It is pointless. You read the article about the FMC not being the optimal situation in the first place. It is just cheaper and more avaliable than a good air-liquid intercooler. Just wait till you can get your hands on the crankbender solution around the end of the year.

I know I just thought I just toss up and idea I had, didnt see threads about it so I thought I would ask.

It makes for too long an intake tract, and too large a volume for the turbo to pressurize. What little gain you'd get in cooling would be lost in the amount of work the turbine would have to be doing to pump air into all that space, and yes, lag would increase.

I was just sitting around the other day staring at my engine bay. I came up with what I thought was an interesting idea. The stock smic is mounted in front of the wheel well on the passenger side of the car. On the drivers side, the window washer resevoir occupies the corresponding space. Would it be benifical to custom mount another smic in the space now occupied by the window washer resevoir and run the two intercoolers in a series with custom piping? I.E. turbo to driver side ic, driver side ic to passenger side ic, and the stock routing for the ic to throttle body connection. Would I lose too much boost presure to make it worthwhile? I have a pipe bender, and an extra intercooler or would this just be a waste of time, and cause my car to lose power?

It's been done on the 1g before. FMIC is better, but dual SMIC was better than single... No room to do this on a 2g without serious work (I've looked into it). Too bad, my SMIC is killing me and a FMIC is unacceptable for what I'm doing.

Hey I was wondering if anyone ever tried running a side mount on each side ...... example off the turbo over to the drivers side out of that intercooler then into the other stock side mount then into the intake like normal? would there be too much preasure drop?? i can get another sidemount for cheap and would like the more stealth/ sleeper look and I dont think I could pull it off with a huge FMIC.

so whatcha think..... thoughts and opinions

well this might be a stupid quetion but... is it possible to buy a extra stock side mount. mount it to the front and hook both intercoolers together? could that be like a $200 set up? if nobody has done it i guess it isnt worth it for what ever reason. just figured id ask. :talon:

well there isn't much planning to it, just run a pipe from the turbo to a front-mount then the pipe from the front mount to the stock side-mount then the side mount to the throttle body....

would this be a good idea? or is there a good reason y people don't do this?
thanks for your input guys :dsm:

I ran a starion front mount air/air then it went into a PWR water to air barrel, gains were tremendous when ice was put into the reservoir of the water to air system. There was a slight pressure drop when the water to air was added. I didnt mind it being there.

Wouldnt the stock intercooler be a little restrictive? I mean...more air is passing through a front mount at a time, then the stock intercooler would slow it down alot. Thats just what i was thinking... Anything to help you out scottie :thumb:

i think it'd wouldn't be to much more restrictive, but it's a posibilitty, and the whole water-cooling idea seems really kick ass for the side mount....
