DSMotorsport's External Oil Cooler Kit

I didn't have any problems at all, I also have a lot of patience too. Dude, look, every DSM is mechanically the exact same stock for stock right? Yes, but once the aftermarket parts come on, that's when it all changes... The Talon front fascia has the 3 mouth like appearances, and its perfect for squeezing a cooler there. Look on the tech articles here, they have a good write up on it. I don't have my camera right now, a buddy of mine is borrowing it, but its 10x8x1 inches for my Oil Cooler, and 7x5x1 for my PS cooler.

If it Pipe Thread(NPT) you want to use teflon tape. If its AN then do not use anything. Leaking should not be a problem.

i used teflon tape the first time and it leaked like crazy. i ended up using some sort of putty(cant remember exactly what it was) to keep it from leaking.

that sucks that a kit for something as important as your oil, comes with fittings that dont fit together.

Ok here's my experience with this cooler set-up. I have it installed on my 98 GSX with the -6AN fittings. In my opinion the lines are a sufficient size. Yeah, you can go bigger if you want, but I wouldn't go any smaller. I have my balance shafts removed and the pressure is fine. It's a little high, but not really a big deal to me. Like you said you can always port out the oil filter housing some. The cooler is HUGE, it's 8" x 11" x 1.5". It's really hard to fit it anywhere. I wanted to put mine in the front left bumper, but my ABS is down there and completely in the way. Even without the ABS down there it would have been a tight fit. I ended up taking my A/C Condensor out (it didn't work anyways....weight savings), fabbing up some brackets, welding them to the rad support and mounting it in there. Oh mine doesn't leak at all either. Make sure you put some kind of lubrication on any aluminium to aluminium fittings (oil filter housing to npt/-an outlet and oil cooler to npt/-an outlet) or you will never get them tight enough and they will leak. I used some antiseize when I put mine one and got them pretty tight. Make sure you don't overtighten them though because it is Al to Al. I'll take some pictures in the morning when I get out of work if you want. And if you want any advice on how to do the stainless lines check out the Tech section. They can be a pain in the butt.

i run -6an pushlock fittings for my oil cooler on my 2g.. Nothing special but it was cheap because i put the lines together myself.. here are a few pics..

Pictures would be helpful, although idealy i want to mount it in the drivers side opening for more airflow. So were you sent the wrong fittings like others say they were, or are they the correct fittings you just have to lubricate them to get them in properly?

Anyone have advice on a good size oil cooler for the drivers side opening? If I can find someone who pieced their own kit together, I just need the size of the cooler. I can do the rest myself. I really dont want to mount it between the intercooler and radiator.

For example, if 10X8X1 is huge, what will fit nicely? Was it the 10 inch side that made it hard to fit or the 8 inch side?

I have never seen anyone with the inlet and outlet facing down. Is there any advantage to this?

That's actually a bad way to do it, you can/will get a high pressure air pocket at the top of it causing inadequate if any flow through the cooler. You would actually want both facing up, or the inlet at the bottom, and the outlet at the top.

It works fine, I can change it when I go to a bigger intercooler. That was the best way it would fit, thats why it is like that. My motor holds 7 quarts of oil between the cooler and the pan.

I was sent all the right fittings with no problem. If someone else got sent the wrong parts it just must have been a mistake. Do you have a ABS Controller in the driver's side bumper? If you do it's gonna be a tight fit. There isn't much room in there with that thing stuffed in there as well. I originally wanted to put mine there as well, but it was just too tight of a fit with the ABS Controller. I couldn't angle the cooler enough to fit it so I gave up and put it in front of the radiater.

My car came with no ABS so that wont be a problem. I just dont want it melting my bumper..

I got the DSMotorsport kit for my 1g. I love it, but the first cooler I got was too big to fit behind the driver's side opening, so I exchanged it for a smaller one. Then I had trouble with the stupid stainless steel lines so I got the pushlock ones instead, and the install went very smoothly. Sorry I can't help in the 2g related details, I just wanted to add that I had a positive experience with their kit. By the way, the cooler they sent me was B&M, and it's very nice.

Yeah ss lines can be a pain, thanks for the input.

This is the setup on my 95 GSX w/ G4CS. It's the largest B&M cooler with 6 -AN lines and a remote oil filter housing that allows me to run a Ford V8 filter. This has bumped the capacity to about 5.5 quarts with out the Morso oil pan.

The only problem with this setup is I have too much oil pressure which is causing leaks and I'm trying to remedy by porting the relief valve. I have no balance shafts and I'm running 20W-50. If I had to do it again I'd use -8AN lines to help lower the pressure a few PSI.

PM for questions I can tell you exactly how I did it if anyone is curious. My "webpage" link is to my photobucket account - which has more pics of my set up. email me if you need anything else.

I'm pretty sure that's the one I ordered... and it fits fine. you have to be creative sometimes and actually make/fab parts for mounting. I used 1/4" angle steel (real stiff) painted it and used Stainless Fasteners. If I could replace every bolt with stainless in the car I would.

I'll just add to this post as well.. I don't melt my bumper @ all in anyway. it doesn't even touch the bumper. A better mounting solution would probably allow better air flow and keep it off the bumper itself.

No problems other than slight oil leaks @ the fittings because of pressure levels. That'll be solved shortly and I'll be trying better sealant. I promise you can make anything work as long as you slow down, use your head, get a case of beer and about 5 trips to home depot/menards/lowes or the like. I think the beer is what made it work. honestly.

It'd probably fit better turned sideways and no you don't need a remote filter.. that's Just how I chose to do it.

Like I said, you'll have to find a good way to mount it and still keep it removable for whatever reason. I'm sure it'd work for you.

Good luck with your project!

I just ordered this oil cooler (part # BMM-70297) from Summit

I'll install it in left side of the front bumper with -10 AN push-lock hoses.
