So I understand these may be some silly questions..but I personally don't know the answers to them, don't bash me LOL.
so i was looking at the dsmlink website and was looking at the ordering tab. it lists the dsmlink v2 package EPROM only..then dsmlink v2 package with socket service.
I'm completely new to the tuning scene and want to know if that means that the v2 package EPROM only IS an EPROM..or do you have to buy a seperate EPROM and have that dsmlink v2 package with socket service? totally confused. I searched up threads and people were talking about buying a 95' EPROM and DSMlink and having that total up like $900. answers please!?

The difference between the 2 packages is just the socketing service. With both packages you'll get the programmed EPROM chip, the OBDII to serial adapter, serial cable, CD, and whatever else comes with it normally. It's just whether you need to have your EPROM ECU socketed or not.

You need to have an EPROM ECU (from a '95) to run DSMlink. Then you need to have the stock EPROM chip removed and a socket put in place so you can install the programmed EPROM chip from your DSMlink package.

When you order the DSMLink and you select "Eprom" they think you already have a socketed eprom ecu. In order to get DSMLink running you have to have a 95 Eprom ECU that is socketed, if you have the 95 Eprom ECU you will have to send it in to get it socketed. If you already have a socketed ECU then you don't have to worry about getting it socketed again. Hope this clears things up a little bit

^ He beat me to it, +1

The socket serive, i believe, is if you already have an eprom and there is no socket in it. What they have to do is solder out the old chip and solder back in a socket which allows you to unplug and plug back in their chip.

man you guys are quick, haha

oh that clears things up, so the package is for an EPROM chip? not the ecu right? so in order for me to run dsmlink i'm going to have to buy an EPROM ECU and get the package..yes?

and something else. does it matter what kind of car i get the 95' EPROM from..like does it matter if the EPROM was for a GSX when i have a GST? when it's a automatic or manual, turbo or n/t?

I do. I'm still on V1, because the car had to sit pretty much the whole time I was in the Navy, but I'll probably be ordering the V2 upgrade next week. I've been missing out on the no-lift-to-shift and everything else that was added with V2.

is tuning simple..i've read threads about terms that i have never heard about in my life. i need to do wayyyy more research before i get in way over my head. i saw some of the things that dsmlink is capable of and it's pretty amazing.

DSMLink has their own forums, and it is set up just like this one, and the people on there are as good as the people on here. There are really only a couple basics that you need to understand to tune the car yourself. It's the same as anything else really, the more you read the more comfortable you become.

Hey guys I don't mean to hi-jack this thread but I was considering ordering a dsmlink for my car and had a couple questions...My car is a 90 and the ecu has eprom and an aftermarket chip installed; it says sst on it and some really small numbers. Would I still need to send my ecu to get socketed or would I just need the chip? Reason I ask is because I'm planning on moving to dsmlink and if my ecu was going to need socketed I was going to send off now while my engine is at the machine shop....again. Also would I still need my wideband? I know the neo will be useless and I don't think I'd need the wideband or egt either but before I sold them I wanted to make sure.

Thanks guys

James

you still need the wideband. EGT....not NEEDED but not a bad thing either.

If you already have an ecu that you can remove the chip from(ie has a socket soldered to it) then you dont need to send it out. Just open up the case and see if you can pull out th eprom chip that is in it now...if not...you need to get it socketed.

Cheers

If it has an aftermarket chip in it then it is already socketed.

You don't need the wideband or egt gauge. But, the wideband will make it so much easier and safer to tune the car so I would keep it if you can.

Personally I think egt gauges are a waste of money. If they go too high the damage has already been done. They don't make it any easier or safer to tune the car.

Alright guys thanks for all the input. Depending on the damage done I'll be ordering it sometime this week. I know it needs new pistons, valves, and bearings at the least, maybe a new block being as it's already bored .04 over.
