ECMlink DSMLink help needed: Won't connect. Running for first time

I posted this on the dsmlink forum, but just in case I figured I'll post here too...

I have everything set up for dsmlink, but the ecu won't connect. Says it times out. I don't have a serial port so I'm using an adapter, but with it I can connect to my palm pilot, so I know that the adapter is working. Why wouldn't the ecu read back?

oh, the car runs btw...just soooooo lean that it's scary

Sometimes the connection gets a little bit loose. Just mess around with it where it hooks to the diagnostic port and try connecting.

double, triple, and quadruple checked. Connections secure from laptop to obdII. I'm pretty sure that from the obdII port to ecu it's going to be alright. Do those wires go directly into the ecu?

Is your car running while trying to connect? I know it may sound like a stupid question but if its not it wont connect, Also you can check/tell it what port it needs to be conecting to it may be reading from a different port then the one you are trying to have it read from.
Just a suggestion.

usb-to-serial setup for port 3, dsmlink set to port 3. I have changed this to other port numbers just to check. Yes, car is on while trying to connect, both engine running and just on run.
