I just received my dsmlink came with the cable and cd, which I had purchased used. The only thing is I don't have the adapter and I didn't know if there was anywhere to get this. The people there told me they don't sell those because of counterfits floating around. I have the registration coade and cd it's just that I don't have the adapter. And the guy that I purchased it from said that he sold the peice to someone else.

As far as I remember the cable is one piece without any adapter for the labtop to OBD2 port. Is that what you are talking about?

No the cable is 2 peices. The DB9 cable and the dongle/adaptor. This is the dongle/adaptor. The picture below that is the cable.

If you dont have that, you are screwed. Thats the main part of DSM Link. You can download the software for free off there webpage.

They will not sell you another one of those adaptors. You will have to buy a whole new DSM Link to get one.

Whoever sold you the db9 cable and software basicly screwed you. There is no way he didnt know you needed that peice. I would tell him to get it back for you or give you a refund.

If you paid with a credit card, call up your card company and do a charge back.

If you cant do that, take his ass to small claims court.. Its like 17 dollars to file and if he doesnt show up, you win by default.

Are you sure what you bought was even a real dsmlink reg info? Someone might have just downloaded the software off dsmlink.com, made up some bullshit reg info and bought a 5 dollar db9 cable to send you thinking you would never get it working or figure out.

I know someone this happened to. He bought a used copy of 2G DSMLink for $400 dollars and when he got it in the mail, it was a CDR with the DSM Link software, a DB9 cable and some reg info. He was like how in the hell do I hook this to my car? The seller told him he musta forgot to included the adaptor and would look for it then a few days later said he wouldnt find it but he could buy one from DSMLink. Anyway he contacted the DSM Link team and they told him they dont sell those anymore due to people sharing/copying or counterfeiting DSMLink. Well talking to some tom guy I think his name was at DSM Link my friend learned the reg info he had gotten wasnt even real, was a total scam.

Shit I forgot about the eprom. Ya! You woulda gotten the eprom chip too.

If you didnt get the adaptor or the chip, then I would say its a total scam.

Also dave, dsmlink wont replace that stuff anyway so either way he screwed either way even if it was legit info.

The only thing he can hope for is he used a credit card as a funding source to pay for it.

If you are a registered with DSMlink, Tom and Dave are reasonable guys. Contact them and don't listen to people who don't know them or own DSMlink and say you are screwed.

the ####? He said he bought it USED therefor he is not a member. DSMLink has no "registration code(s)" He also did not mention receiving a chip. He also mentioned he contacted DSMLink (tom/dave) and they informed him they do not replace the "box's" because of counterfits. He probably IS screwed and those who mentioned that ESPECIALLY based off of the limited info the poster gave us are giving good info. If you paid with a CC do a charge back.

So there isn't an adapter out there that does the same thing, because I don't really feel like going throuh all that.

Nope. Did you get a chip with the package? You know with DSMLink you have to pull the ECU out, remove the chip, socket, and reinstall the chip that comes with DSMLINK.

I can't believe someone would buy DSMlink used or otherwise without researching it 1st. Darwinism at its finest. :|

And in answer to the question about if there is something else that will do the same thing as the adapter... if there were why would we all be shelling out $600+ bucks for the real deal.

No, I'd say it's capitalism run amok maybe because the right-wing idiots have convinced the Great Unwashed that trial lawyers are - by definition - bad so no-one is worried about getting sued anymore. Darwinism is when you hit a guy when he's already down and so he pulls out a frickin gun.

You need to understand that the software and adaptor has certain checks it does to make sure you have there real dongle/adaptor.

Like we have been telling you if you bought this without the eprom chip and dongle then the guy who sold it to you knew exactly what he was doing. He was ripping you off.

Sounds like he basically downloaded the software off www.dsmlink.com, burned it on a cd and bought a $3 dollar DB9 cable then made up some reg info and sold it as a used copy of DSMLink.

I suppose the reg info could always be real but either way the seller knew you needed the dongle and chip.

If you bought this with a credit card like used a credit card threw Paypal or something, call up your credit card company and do a charge back like we keep telling you.

Btw mind if I ask how much you paid?

The same dam thing just happened to me! I payed 500 for it and he told me he was missing the cable in the auction but I had not idea about not being able to get another cable and now I can't even get ahold of the guy. I really want this dsm link is there any websites out there on making this cable?

Sorry, you got ripped off. If you bought it on eBay or used a credit card you might be able to contest the charges but there isn't anything you can do to make it work.

Ummmmmm........why not just buy the real thing from the real guys who made the real product? Especially since you were willing to pay $500. Was the extra $100 just to much?

The dongle is there for a reason. Not only does it interface the OBDII port to the DB9 connector but it is there to make sure you really bought it from an authorized dealer. When buying used the rule is always DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE HAND and BUYER BEWARE.

Now go get your refunds from the guys who sold you that.

Guys you need to do some reasearch first. I would say you all got screwed. Like has been stated the software can be downloaded from their site for free & the cable is a standard cable you can pick up anywhere. The parts that matter are the eprom chip and the adapter that plugs into your diagnostic port & cable. This adapter is what makes dsmlink work & no there is nowhere else you can get one from. As far as gettin either of these replace by DSMLink it looks like your SOL as it states right on their website they will not replace either even if you origionally purchased it from them. Did you happen to get a registration email from Thomas at dsmlink before you got the goods? If this was a legit copy the seller should have contaced them & told them they were selling it & then they would change the reg. info & send you out the password etc. for the formus. Depending on how you paid I would get a refund as you have been scamed. I would sugest next time to do some reasearch when you are making a big purchase so you don't get screwed, all of the info about buying a used copy can be found on the dsmlink webpage. Just so you guys know I purchased my dsmlink new for under $520 from an authorized dealer, its all about the reasearch :thumb:

Um I bought mine brand new and I never got an "adaptor" as pictured above. Mine is just a single whole piece of a serial connector on one side, and the obd2 connector on the other, it doesn't come appart. I remember a kid in the same town as me had something like in the picture above though. I didn't think it would be hard to make ourselves though?

Do you understand what a dongle is?

don·gle Audio pronunciation of "dongle" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (dôngl, dng-)
n.

A hardware device that serves as copy protection for certain software by rendering the software inoperable when the device is not plugged into the printer port.

or in this case the data port.

The software checks for this dongle, if the dongle isnt there, the software isn't suppose to work.

Did you buy your copy from dsmlink.com? There are unsupported cracked pirated copies going around. I dont think the pirated ones use a dongle type device from what I understand. Sure pirated copies work but you dont get offical support or upgrades.

Have you tried your one piece cable with dsmlink, does it work? I've never heard of them having a 1 piece setup, has anybody else? I know pocket logger is one piece...

I could have sworn they originally were one piece hence my posting #2 but clearly all the current (for some time I guess) are of the dongle and cable varity.

Hopefully someone besides elementalwindx will also have one and save me a trip to the doctor for early senility testing.
