Well on a somewhat local forum, somebody asked what generations are actually DSM's. There is a girl that showed this statement.

"But again, 1g's are, in my opinion, the only 'real' DSM's. Because in 93 they changed the name from Diamond Star Motors to Mitsubishi Motors Manufacturing America..
And Chrysler provided the 420a engine.."

Now I believe that 1gs are the only ACTUAL DSM's. But we call 1g and 2g's DSM's. They don't believe I would post in a big forum to ask, and they think I will get "schooled". So My fellow DSM'rs help me out here.

I'm the girl off our local forum.
But that was my OPINION. I do believe that DSM's are 1g and 2g.. but the 4g63(t) was in fact the FIRST engine produced. And Chrysler produced the 420a which is in Avengers, some Neons, etc.
I didn't mean to start something on that forum, but I'm just curious as to get this settled, just for my information as well..

What about the 1g N/T 1.8L engines? Those weren't 4G63 engines, but they came in 1g's. Are those considered DSM then?

A lot of people base their opinion on a DSM that it HAS to have the 4G63 to be considered a DSM whereas DSM was just a name of a joint venture between Mitsu and Chrysler which created 1g and 2g eclipses/talons/lasers. And my friend has a 95 RS eclipse with a 420a engine in it, but on the firewall and other places, it has a DSM label on it. So is it not a DSM?

2g's have a sticker on every body panel of the car saying "DSM" on it.

Entry #5 'splains it all. http://www.dsm.org/info/glossary.htm Short story is 1g's, 2g's and GVR4's are "considered" to be "DSM's", all minutae aside.

This has been beaten to death and back again, and this topic usually comes up when people get caught up in dates and timelines. Jim, I thought of that link as soon as I read the original post, but then I remembered this link.

Basically, the female has a point. Now I'm not saying 2Gs aren't "DSMs". All I'm saying is that many people would agree with her statement. I'm sorry to say Bart, but you can't quickly post the BS flag on that "local" forum; plenty of people would argue both sides of the issue. IMHO it has turned in to (and began as) a petty argument that has continued to go unresolved, for one reason or another (usually due to differing opinions).

Just for your reading pleasure, our founder has provided us with a little summary of his own here.

I actually got banned from the local forum for posting this, and calling the kid out on it.

It was well worth your guys time. Ill let this die down before Guy gets on my case again:)

Yupp, that link where the timelines are, I did a presentation on DSM's this year for school.
That's what got me into thinking more of them and what not..

Again, sorry about all this confusion. Thanks guys!

Tell her to open her hood and take a look at the firewall and tell you what she see's.

I have a 1998 tsi awd and it says MITSUBISHI on the the firewall.
Also the gvr4 was 100% made in japan and shipped over here as was the mirage turbo and the colt turbo.
I own all 3.

By the way it's not the dsm that gets me excited it's the Mitsubishi that that I love. And the new evo's (10s) are supposed to be a Chrysler motor(4b11) not a mitsu design (this is from a really good mitsu (dealer) mechanic) and again in my opinion, very disappointed. But time will tell, but it is not the same.

Its the new "World" engine. A joint development between Mitsu, chrysler and Hyundai so its not a "chrysler" engine per se. I can't recall whether there are any others involved.

Any car that was made as a product of the joint venture between plymouth, mitsubishi, and eagle IS A DSM. That's really the bottom line. It doesn't matter if it has a 4G63, 4G63T, 4G64, or 420a; as Luke said, if it has the DSM stamp on it, it's a DSM.

I didn't even realize this was still a debate now-a-days.

They're not "considered to be", they are. :thumb:

Diamond Star Motors was out of business before a 2G hit the road, but my '95 has DSM stickers all over it.

And why in the HELL are we STILL asking this question?
