DSM link headache

I am looking into getting DSM link for my engine management but I am hearing that my 99 eclipse cant take it because of something in my ECU that i have to swap out of a 95-96 ECU. I dont understand why DSM link wont work on my ECU. I am wondering if i should look into somthing like an ECU from an Evo 8 or is DSM link worth the trouble and money to have it put in. I dont even know where I would get an ECU from a 95-96.

PS. Also i had one more question, do i need a laptop to hook into my info port to run DSM link?

Next time please do some research before posting, as this has been answered already.

You need an EPROM ECU to run DSMlink. The only 2g's that came with them were most '95's.

DSMlink is a very powerful logger/tuner, especially with the all of the features of V3 (direct access, speed density, etc.). However, it's not cheap compared to other options out there. But most people think it's well worth the money, and it's got many more features that other systems without going to a full stand alone.

However, there are some new breakthroughs with being able to flash the '99 ECU. This only requires a cable, but does require some knowledge.

you question doesnt make any sense. Yes you can take your kick panel off? If you take it off the ecu is located in the center console passenger side.

Yes both sides. You have to get the three bolts holding it in. Two on the driver's side and one and the passenger's side.

it makes perfect sense. i take the kick panel off to get to the center ### i sure aint tearing the complete console center off

You need to take both kick panels off, as stated above there are 2 bolts on the drivers side and one on the passenger side. No need to take off the center console (Which is very easy to take off as well).

The removal is very simple, sometimes it just takes a little patience to get it out.

Make sure to disconnect your battery before unplugging the ECU so that you don't risk ruining it.

Look at your spark plug wires, if they are in order (as the number states on the coilpack) you have a stock ecu. If they have been switched you have an eprom.

WHAT?! As in the firing order from the coil pack? Please go further into this. I have never read this.

A bit OT, but the numbering sequence on the coil pack is not the actual firing order. On the 1G 4G63 (and most 2G's I believe), the coil output sequence is 4-1-2-3, but the actual sequence that the plugs fire in is 1-3-4-2.

Normally I recommend DSMLink to anyone and everyone either looking to upgrade from a SAFC or as their first engine management system. But for you, I say look into doing the rest of your basic bolts on first. You still have a lot of parts to replace for better performance.

Also, do a lot of reading. DSMLink will be by far the easiest of the engine management systems that have been stated. The Evo8 and flashing a stock ECU will be harder for someone first looking into engine management. The search button is your friend and can most likely answer any question you can think of. If you can't find it with your first search, change up some of the wording and I'm sure you'll find something.

I agree. First mods should be wbo2 and some type of EMS.

I would have to say just go with DSMLink. Out of all the EMS for are cars, it is the best choice. The other good thing about it is, you can grow into it. If that makes since.

i didnt ask anything off topic, all i said is that he can flush his 99 ecu with this software EVOSCAN which will work with 98-99 ecu, and it is pretty cheap setup all he needs is a laptop evoscan software $25 and the cable i think it is $169 not sure, i also hear that this software is pretty cool and easy plug and play.

Honestly, nothing new has been stated in this thread. If you have to ask how to find the ecu because you haven't searched the forum, then you should ask yourself if you have the motivation to actually work on your car when it needs it. These are cars that require regular maintenance when stock, let alone when modified.
