I need to drop my automatic transmission. My car's a 97 Talon TSi, not AWD. My question is what's the easiest way to get the halfshafts out? We just don't have time for any unneccessary steps, ya know? What I've found from searching is to take out the passenger side and then slip the other side out. However I don't know the easiest way to get the halfshaft out even on just the passenger side. I tried VFAQ but this stupid computer wouldn't let me access anything on the site. I have to have the tranny dropped by the end of tomorrow to get to the shop to be rebuilt. Thanks in advance for any help!

Sometimes you have to "pop" them out with a prybar. Use the transmission to serve as you're push off point for the pry bar, then set the wedge part of the prybar in the ridge on the axle cup and pry against the transmission. Here's the vfaq:

10th picture down is what I'm talking about. If you need any more help with it, the rest of the vfaq should serve sufficiently.

ok thanks a lot! I'll look at the vfaq then and try all that tomorrow. :)

Ok.. Now the halfshaft is separated from the tranny. However we need 3 or 4 inches clearance to drop the tranny. So I'm pretty sure we need to remove the passenger halfshaft completely. Considering lack of time, is there an easier, quicker way to separate the halfshaft from the rotor side. I mean does everything have to be taken apart, such as the rotor, balljoint, control arm, etc. or is there a way to take off one bolt and get the 3 or 4 inches of clearance?
