I'm planning to get back into Autocrossing and I want to use my 2G RST for autox but its registered non-op right now and its not smog legal with the turbo kit. I don't want to go through all the hassle and cost of smogging it and insuring it if I'm just going to use it as a weekend race car.

Does anyone do the same thing. Have a non-op car just for autocross and they just drive it the autocross.

I was thinking of just getting a one day moving permit every autocross. Will this work and how does the insurance work for this, do you need insurance if you move it one day? There has to be someone people get their non-op cars to autocrosses and stuff. Like a special event pass or something.

This is in California also.

I do not know the insurance laws in California, but I would not drive a car I have put any sort of money into without insurance. If you hit and injure someone you will be held liable and there is no one to protect you from the other person's insurance company. They are nasty. Even if someone else hits you, you won't see a penny because you don't have insurance and that would be something the other insurance company would use to get out of paying you. This is how it is in MA anyway.

Are you against towing the vehicle or something? Thats how everyone else gets their car to and from the events.

If you get pulled over even with a moving permit your still responsible to have proof of insurance.

I say just get a truck and trailer. That way you don't have to worry about driving it to the track and if you break it you can still get it home!

I would never drive any car without insurance no matter what it is. If you kill someone you will be financially ruined forever, just not worth the risk. Happen to be able to set up a residence in another state? Wisconsin never even wants to see a car let alone look under the hood.

Well the insurance isn't a big deal I can try and get like one day insurance or something. But what if your car doesn't pass smog and just want to move it to like say an autox course. No1 does this? I want to avoid trailering it.

If you have AAA you can use them. If you have the regular AAA the first 3 miles are free then its $.60/mile. If you are a gold member you get four 100 mile tows each year. It would be hilarious to get your car dropped off then picked up by AAA at an event. Plus it's cheaper than buying a truck and trailer.

LOL... why don't you just "tip" the smog guy. that way you can register and insure it. If you want to avoid using a trailer than thats really the only logical way of going about it. It's going to be a major pain in the ass any other way.

How about going and getting a po box in a county that doesn't have smog? that way you can cut smog out all together?

Yeah lots of options but inconvienient ones. Well thats what I get for slapping a turbo on a non turbo car in california.

I might just take the kit off and smog it and hope it passes and just register it WTF!!'

OR sell it and get an MR2 or something and not farkle with it

haha yeah towing it to autocrosses would be hilarious

Trailering the car is what I absolutely want to avoid its just too costly and I don't got anything that can pull my car anyway.

Getting temp permits won't work in california anymore either, they're really got us by the balls out here.

Well thanks for the input.

If you drive it under X miles per year, you may be able to specially register it where it doesn't need to pass smog.

I saw a 1g with a V8 swap in it (plus a lot more work) locally that had a "Collectible" plate on it. It just needed the basics to pass inspection and didn't have to deal with the local smog check. CA may have something similar.
