So I'm driving down the highway the other day in cruise control when my tranny decides to take a crap on itself. I hear a slight pop, then notice my car decelerate for a brief moment, then try and re-establish its speed through the cruise control. I pulled over the car to check under the hood and nothing seemed to be out of place. I continued to drive for another couple of miles and started noticing a distinct whining noise coming from the tranny as I would accelerate through gears. Clutch engagement was a little rough, but the car would shift fine. I then started to notice a loud rattling sound coming from the tranny area. Kind of like someone had thrown a couple of bolts into my bell housing. Over the next few miles, the car got so hard to drive, that I had to park it and get it towed. When we attempted to push the car by hand, I noticed that even in neutral, the transmission was getting hung up on something. It's almost like the car is half in, and half out of gear. When the car is rolling in neutral, there's still the loud rattling sound and harsh vibrations throughout the car.

What am I looking at here? My first thought was that I broke something in the transfer case. Since the clutch feels fine and the car goes in and out of every gear fine, it leads me to believe that something in the transfer case is effed up. What do you guys think? Should I just pull the transfer case out and take it apart, or start with the tranny......

Let me know what you think.

Pull the tcase and push the car. If everything sounds normal then its probably your tcase if everythings not dont exclude the tcase but its probably the tranny.
I know the tranny will leak out all the fluid but if you're just pushing it should be ok.
HAVE FUN! I effin hate transmissions...

So are you buying a junkyard tranny, new or going straight to an aftermarket setup, because that thing is never working again.

It looks like you cracked your housing, all the fluid ran out and then you chewed every bearing in it to pieces. The only thing you're getting out of it is a paper weight or maybe some cash for recycling the metal.

Great photos though :) Is your transfer case in good shape? How about your drive shaft seal? A locked-up t-case could have blown a tranny but you shouldn't have been able to move for very long after it freezing. When mine went it locked all four tires up at 15 mph after I slowed down due to a few lurches at 50mph.

There was still fluid in the tranny when I took it apart. I think it was all that time of me raping the motor and all wheel drive launches with my spec clutch. I've been upgrading a lot on my car lately and haven't touched the drivetrain. Luckily, the transfer case is fine. I'm thinking that I'm gonna buy a junkyard tranny and buy the rebuild kit for it. The hard part is finding one in my vicinity. Shipping is always a bi***. If anybody knows of anything in or around Arizona, let me know. Any help would be appreciated.

What stage spec clutch did/do you have? And if you get a 91 and up, you'll have to change the shift cables as well, and the tcase if the spline counts are different. Just something to think about.

Oh my holy carnage. That is one effed up tranny.
