I've recently done a auto to 5spd. conversion. (i have two 2gen cars trying to make one) I didnt have any problem with the flywheel or trans. itself, my problem lies in the driveshaft. I went to "lock" the driveshaft into the new transmission and they would to not. The teeth for the gears fits together but i seem to be about an inch to an inch and a half away from were the driveshafts are suppose to lock into place. Are the driveshafts to different lengths (auto vs. 5spd) or is there something else that i might be overlooking? If someone else has had this problem and can help i would be grateful.

Lets make it a 2 part question. When doing the conversion, I have noticed that i'm missing the vacuum canister that should be with the 5spd. With the auto tranny there was no canister and my head seams to differ from my 2nd engine. Is the canister needed? or can i go with the auto vacuum lines on a 5spd?

thanks,
Ken

The part that pushes into the diff should be the same. You need to really push it in there Kinda with a slaming action. I have had to even take a wooden block over the end, hold it straight and hit them with a big hammer on some cars. What I have found to work the best is put the splined end with the nut on it into the spindle but not attach the ball joint and sorta wack it in using the spinde kinda as a hammering tool .

The over all axle lenght could be diffrent. Alot of times Mitsu will say diffrent part #'s for diffrent models and years. The best way I have found to double check is call AutoZone or somewhere like that and give them both years of the cars and have them look up the axles and see if they are the same.

Thank you for the help. I know they are suppose to "lock" into place. Every time i've had an engine out they seem to go back in fairl easily. I called dealership to see if they are different part numbers as well . The dealership just said they were different lengths, not how much. They also asked if the car had ABS. I undersatnd there is a ring around the shaft for the ABS sensor to read, but they made mention of a clip as well (inside the tranny?). Another question has come up in my quest for driveshafts, does anybody know what the factory shafts are rated for? (horsepower)

I'm going to need to get new set very soon. If anybody has likes a certain brand and can tell me why, i'd love to hear. I was looknig to be at 400 hp when the car was all said and done. I know i have a long way to go. I figure if I need to get new ones now, I should do it now.
