Well came out today and someone smashed my driver side door window.... Shattered everywhere. But they didnt take anything, wtf. WTF It's a good thing they didn't but, why smash it. ahrhhgh

So is there any good places to buy the replacement glass?? Or do I have to take it to a shop? I'd rather save the money by doing something easy myself. Thanks guys.

Replacing window glass is a PITA. If you don't have glass coverage on your insurance you're in for a crappy time.

Dang! I never looked into replacing them, thought it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Maybe I'll just take it to a shop then if it's that bad... OMG

Anyone know how much they paid to get theirs done? Guess the DSM will be hitting the garage for something other then inspection for the first time :notgood:

Na, i used to work at an auto glass company. its alot easier w/ power windows than manuals. its not too hard at all. basically all you need is a screwdriver. pop the door panel off, remove plastic cover, clean/ vaccum out all remaining glass, gently slide in new window in sliders and reverse. if your a first timer, it will take an hour or less.

Good thing i have pwr windows then haha...
I like to say I am very good at taking things apart and putting them back together, so maybe I will try, thanks for the insight. If worse comes to worse, I always like to say I tried... haha :thumb:

Now I just have to locate the glass! Get out the junkyard yellow pages tomorrow guess.. :sneaky:

yeah junkyard is a good place to check for used glass. but a new glass shouldnt be over $100. and for us to install it was usually 50-75 bucks. but if we have to fix your mistakes, then its going to be more.

Dude, don't even worry. Door glass is cake. I just barely replaced my passenger side window because it had a scratch on it I didn't like. The glass I got at a local junk yard and it cost me $10... it took me 10 minutes to put it in too. No problem-O!

Haha, I already thought about that! GRRR! Although i don't have a clue what happened, I doubt it was b/c I did something to someone! Just one of those days.

Yeah I looked at the repair manuals...it looks easy enough. I figured, if I could assemble the head on my car, I can put a window in it too. ;)

I need to replace the glass in my 91's passenger side door. Anyone got a walkthrough on how it's done? I checked Vfaq and didn't find anything helpful and will continue to seach on here and other forums. Just wanted to drop by and relay this post to see if anyone could hook me up while I'm browsing. Thanks.

for a 1g its not all that hard. Ive had to do it twice (stupid people with nothing better to do)

Anyways remove your door panel. (just some philips screws and the window crank "if manual windows")

after youve removed the door panel just remove the old glass however you desire. (kick it out break it the rest the way whatever)

then roll the window to about 3/4 the way down. there will be an access point to the 2 screws in the window that mount it to the middle slider (that makes the window move up and down) remove the screws and retain the 2 plastic clips if needed.

Remove all reminants of old glass. the safty glass little "peices" love to stay in the bottom of the door and in the weather stripping/rails. remove all glass especially from the frame of the weather stripping, this is important because it likes to make the new window really hard to roll up and down it you dont get it ALL out.

After that you can insert the new window. make sure it has the 2 plastic peices installed in the bottom of the window. (two holes in the glass)

after that make sure you have the 2 bolts you took out that mount the window close by. then you can insert the window into the frame. you will want to insert the smaller side first (front) and then the rear. it is easyer if you go from the outside of the car to insert it. once you get it in and make sure the window is properly in both sides of the framing/rails. after tghat just gently slide the window down until the plastic peices lign up into the slider in the access hole. then take the 2 bolts and put them in their respective locations. then test that the window rolls up and down smoothly and that everything is good and great then just reinstall everything the reverse of how you took it off.

Hope that helps.

Awesome, I'm sure I can make a compilation of your steps and my own winging it and get it in there. Thanks for the help.

My car was broken into the other night (91 talon tsi) and in the process the passenger window was smashed into pieces...now I need to replace the window. I have crank windows, but have a way to get a power window glass to replace it.

My question is: will glass from a power window door work with a crank window setup? Is the window the same size?

Thank you

The glass itself is going to be the same size. There shouldnt be any problems putting the power window glass in your car.

Yeah, the door glass isn't difficult on a 1G. Hardest part when my passenger side got smashed was hitting up a junkyard and having them insist it was 1G glass, when it was for a 2G. Well, that and trying to vacuum broken glass out of the bottom of the inside of the door so it wouldn't rattle around. And constantly finding little chunks of glass that I somehow missed, even though I pulled the seats and console to vacuum everything out. $30 for the glass itself.

And I really don't envy 2Gers that get a window smashed. Instead of two screws holding the glass onto the travel in a 1G, there's like five or seven things to bolt on in a 2G, from what I saw. :b

Yeah this is an everyday thing in cali. It's cake bro. I'tll take you longer to vacuum out the broken glass then installing the new one. And paracticing in the junkyard will help you not break any clips on your car. I payed 30 bux in the junkyard too. OEM, can't beat that.

That's what both my dsm 1g owning friends advised, since i woke up this morning to one of the maintenance men saying the passenger side window on my car had been smashed. They didn't even steal anything. Just smashed the window. U-Pull said there are 12 1g dsm's there, hopefully one has some good glass, $24.99 VS 100 $ deductible, some full coverage :toobad:
