Dont understand how to make datalogger cable for laptop

Ive searched and searched and all I can find is a how-to make the cable for a palm. I have a laptop ready and after searching I found the TMO data logger software and Just need to make a cable to connect to the serial port. I had bought one a long time ago and it was just the serial connector and then the wires that I plugged individually into the diagnostic port, and I noticed the cables for the palm have resistors on them. Maybe the cable I had was ghetto but Can anybody tell me how to make it for the laptop?
