done!!! but it doesn't idle right

i just finished replaceing the head on a friends 420a. i did the timing belt twice and now i am sure it is in time. the car is idleing ruff. it holds a constant idle but rocks back and forth alot. the reason i replaced the head is cause of a timing belt failure. could this have damaged the block or internals in any way? i am tired of working on this car and my 8.8:1 rebuild kit will be here in a few days so i need to work on my own motor. what could my problem be?

also the brakes dont work right. they don't grab and take all day to stop the car. do i have to bleed them cause i had the vaccum hose unhooked from the mani? if not why don't they work?

Not sure abou the idling issue, but your brakes, sounds like you have alot of air in ur lines. Does your pedal feel real spongy (easy to press). If so youll need to bleed your hoses and have someone pump your pedal whiel ur bleeding them. Have you inspected the rotors and pads?

Check if you have any vaccum leaks, EGR valve, and work your way up. If you are sure the timing is good it might be something simple. Could also be a fouled/faulty fuel injector.

i bled the brakes and they still don't work right. they are hard to press and they still take forever to stop the car.

also the car is still not running right. it idles like it is missing. if i pull one the wire from the spark plug 3rd from the passengers side the motor does not change. all the other plugs seem to bog down the motor when i pull thier wire. i changed the plugs and switch the wire and it still does the same thing.

please help i need it.

did you not check the bottom end/pistons/valves for damage? Is there a vacuum leak anywhere/

If you can pull a plug wire from the plug and the engine runs the same, then its obviously some kind of spark problem, check your coil pack, plugs, wires, etc.

Yea the coil pack is known to cause such problems and since its a cheap repair you may as well try and replace it.

Also look for vacuum leaks.

i am ready to burn this car. i figured out the break problem. some guy "took the vaccum hose for the brake booster and used it as a replacement for his on his monte carlo." when he put it back it was backwards and the valve in it closed the wrong way. i'd like to beat the poop out of him right now.

the coil pack seems to be bad. i tried to use my extra one but the harness is different on it. they both have three prong harness things but they are different. has this happened to anybody else? is there an adaptor?

95's and early 96's have three round prongs, while late 96's and up use three flat ones
just tell him to buy an msd coil pack

i had a similar problem with my car when i first bought it, so i took off the vaccum hose from the booster and turned it around, stil lno better, so i took a blowgun and stuck in the hose, and the check valve flew out at probabally 200mph, id hate to be standing in front of it when it did but i see u already got yours fixed, sorry i didnt get to it sooner

check your ignition assembly ( had this problem on a 95 tsi ) plug on the intake and check to make sure that the spark plug wires are pluged in all the way on the coil pack and didn't come loose ( this problem was on my 1992 N/T)

I would do one of two things here... Find a coil in a junk yard that fits a 97(just to be sure) and newer 2gnt or neon. That will rule out the coil provided you get a good one. I would also do a compression check. You asked if there could be any damage to the internals but no one seemed to answer your question. Yes, could have damaged something during the belt failure. This IS an interferance engine and chances are high that you may have had the valves and pistons contact. A compression test will tell you this and a cheap compression gauge will work on almost every car and will cost you less than most single part anyone has suggested or is going to suggest you throw at your car to fix this problem.

Let's start from scratch here and see what you have ruled out by replacing parts or an actual test procedure. Also, if your vehicle is fixed feel free to update this thread since I see it started this thread almost a month ago.
