dome lights only go on when locking

I just bought a 98 GSX and I noticed the footwell lights didn't work. I replaced both bulbs and I checked the fuse and it ended up being blown, but the lights only come on now when I lock/unlock the car using my remote. I thought it was the door switches, but the door chime works half the time - still no lights when the chime decides to work. When the chime actually works, the ring around the ignition lights up - still no footwell lights. Any ideas?

the problem is the switch in the door if you replace them you should be good to go
