So lots of fun with my 91 these days.. I kind of suspected a blown HG before I put the FMIC, fuel pump, aluminum radiator, ect.. I was hoping the radiator/fans/hoses would magically cure the overheating. Well it turns out the HG is blown. I figure while the engine is apart I may do my oil pump. The oil pressure on the stock gauge seems just a little low to me. (Autometer gauge is not hooked up yet). Can I just replace the drive/driven gear and sproket? Or do I need to replace the whole case too? I need to use an OEM one cause I've gotten screwed on every ebay part that I've purchased, so I think I have learned my lesson on that. In addition, the MLS HG I used previously was ebay, and thats probably why it blew..

Thanks in advance

So I ended up buying a top line oil pump and the oem drive/driven.. I didn't realize the topline came with those gears too so I have double.. I also got the 1.6 mirage bal shaft piece that was recommended. Also I went with OEM HG and I already had arp's in there. The head is at the machine shop and hopefully everything is good with it. So now I'm just waiting...

Thanks, those are good threads. I'm going to look into what they are using. Hopefully that wasn't the cause of my last failure. I also hope I am ok with the OEM felt gasket, I'm starting to think I should of went MLS

? Why do i keep hearing this belt sander crap? My friend asked me if thats how my machine shop resurfaced heads when I offered them to do his head. What kinda idiot would think thats ok? Ppl really do this?

No you are better with the composite OE of Felpro.

If you want an MLS, the block needs to be decked.

ANd you will see why I say go composite. Post #15

Man! Thanks so much! I feel bad I couldn't find this all on my own, those are the best threads on my issue. Awesome. I'm going to go down and try to look at my block surface today or tomorrow. I really don't want to pull the motor! At that point I would have to consider a full rebuild and tranny rebuild, then I would be stuck driving my Mustang in the snow some more :sosad:

Yeah whole case just to be safe, and I had to pull the bottom end and get it milled. This has became a very time consuming and costly job! And it's starting to snow a bunch! Also he noticed my rack and pinion leaking, thinking about ps delete now

So far it looks good, wil you post up a few of both the block and head deck surfaces please? :)

That surface finish looks a bit rough for a Cometic/MLS HG, but a composite should seal just fine (Fel-pro 9627PT)

This head has a similar surface finish as your block.

Now this surface finish is for a MLS HG
Notice how fine the milling marks are.

Very good to know! I'm really glad I'm using a oem composite, I want to get some photos of before the machining, and I'm sure I'll find out why the last gasket didn't hold! I don't want to blame him for overlooking getting the block machined the first time, but it definitely didn't hold for more than a couple thousand miles... While he is in there, I had him do also: rod bearings and main (both acl), and piston rings, as well as the oil pump and he's going to do the oil flow mods. Also he is putting new seals in the rack and pinion and de-powering it.

Thanks for your great info BogusSVO!
