Let me start out by saying Hi. I am new to this forum, and DSM tuning. I just bought this 91 Talon TSI AWD for $400. The previous owner had it running the morning i went to look at it. When he started it up for me to test, it didn't want to idle. The only way to keep it idling, was to feather the gas a bit. The valvetrain was also loud. I have heard that they usually tick, but this was louder than normal. Anyone have some suggestions to check?

I figure that since it was running that morning, it shouldn't be anything too major. Just by chance that the valvetrain is screwed, will a head from a 93 eclipse (2.0 dohc, nonturbo) fit this motor?

since you just picked up this car, you pretty much know nothing about its history, so start with a tune-up: Oil change, (you dont necesarily have to switch to synthetic if you just want to figure things out) check your base timing, a fuel injector cleaner, because your injectors may be dirty, and maybe even a fuel filter if you feel like it, go from there and see how it reacts, if oil pressure is low you'll hear ticking pretty bad, or maybe even the lifters are done with theyre good operating days, and yes they can be pretty loud, so after a while if they dont stop ticking, you may have to replace them...

Do a little research also on ticking lifters and you'll find a lot of threads on how people supposedly stop them from beeing loud, try that too.

Sweet! I picked up a parts car for 100 with mint interior and motor....too bad it wasn't a turbo. Oh well, a head is worth more than 100. Plus the TSI needs a windshield. I will have both cars here by next weekend. I am sure i will have a bunch more questions for you guys!

For the lifter tick, you can try Marvel Myster Oil, its in a red container at pretty much any autoparts store, when you change the oil, use a quart of this to replace a court of oil, and it may help you out with valvetrain issues.

After doing some research, do you guys think it is possible that it masy have jumped timing, hence the idle issue and really noisy valvetrain?

Nevermind my last post. I just read the thread again and realized that Ivan suggested checking the base timing.
