Ok so I have an eagle Talon TSI that I have put a few threads on here about it has a 6 blot swap, now my issue is I fixed some of the wiring issues so I have fuel and spark. but while trying to start it using starting fluid it back fired and then the motor instanty had a different sound. now we are thinking the valves are bent. does this sound possible?, a compression check leads me to believe this.

so my question: could this happen to an engine that isn't running and if the valves hit how many would be taken out by this. I am not able to look any further at the moment. because i am at the shore....but my brain is always thinking of ways to fix this car even on vacation.

Bent valves from using starter fluid... doubtful.

If the timing was off more than 3 teeth then just turning the engine over with a wrench can bend valves. usually if I'm trying to start an engine and I have spark and fuel first thing I check is cam timing, not my tool box for starting fluid. just my 2c

You wont know any bent valve is bad news, gonna have to pull to see the carnage, simple as that. Let us know how many are bent usually a few are bent when timing fails.

See if it jumped a tooth in timing, also your CAS maybe upside down. Those are my two thoughts. Starter fluid is very unlikely to damage your valves especially with starting trouble. Oh and as for valves bending, everytime i've done it, it bent all 16, but im lucky i guess .

Did you switch the injector pins in the ECU harness did you swap the firing order or if you didnt swap the firing order then did you switch the two wires on the coil pack for the inverted cam signal? I did this swap about two years ago

I made sure the timing markes on all pulleys were good and accurate, it still wouldn't start, so I was unsure if it was getting fuel through the injectors (possible clog) so I sprayed starting fluid, and the backfire (no start) caused the engine to have a different sound, then prompting me to do a compression check. I will check when i get home from vacation, on whether the pulley are still lined up or it jumped and i guess pull the head. lovely
