I have been looking for an ECU for my friend. He has a 91 FWD turbo eclipse. His ECU went bad, and I found him one, but the MD# doesn't match. The dealership told him it had to match exactly, but if it is out of a 91 FWD turbo as well it shouldn't matter should it?

Does your friend's car have a manual or automatic transmission? The ecu's for a/t's and m/t's were programmed different due to the a/t's using smaller injectors. (450cc for m/t, 380cc for a/t)

As long as the drivetrain is the same then you'll have no problem.

Between 91 and 93 as long as the ECU is for the right transmission and not a California ECU it will work regardless if it's a FWD or AWD ECU. 90's and 94's are each special in their own ways. 90 ECUs work in later cars by swapping pins 6 and 14. 94 Federal spec ECUs got California spec EGR.

Which ECU are yot thinking about using?

I just found one out of a 91 FWD 5Spd turbo, which is what my buddies car is because his went bad. I was curious though because I always hear about people switching them out, but then the dealership said the numbers have to match exactly. They probably just want him to buy one for 1200.00 though. So this one should work just fine right?
