Do you trust your factory knock sensor?

I've read that some of the "big" guys tune for around 15-20cts of knock. This is the point most likely of absolute max power but it is right before the point of max destruction. Not to be done unless you have engine parts sponsors:D

Assuming that your fuel is up to the task, you should be able to find maximum power long before any detonation. More timing doesn't make more power, the correct amount of timing makes max power :thumb:

On English Racing site, there is a nice tech article about tuning. He talks about tuning on a sidemount where he tunes for 3cts in 3rd and up to 15cts in 4th obviously due to the stock smic lack of cooling

I try to tune for very little knock just to be safe. I'm not worried about squeezing the few extra ponies.

note the fuel up to task part.

you're not telling me anything i don't know in that department
My fuel system is well up to task for what i'm doing with my car:thumb:

Octane not amount of fuel delivered :thumb: Pump fuel you will usually find yourself being limited by knock. Finding peak power at a given boost level will be hard on pump gas because you will run into detonation issues. If you have something like c16, you will likely be not limited by the fuel and you can tune the car for peak power. Peak power isn't found by running the timing so far advanced that you knock and then backing it off a few degrees. It is found by finding the correct amount of timing that the engine needs to ignite the fuel and build peak cylinder pressure at the correct time. You can over advance an engine, not knock, and still lose power all while putting un-needed strain on your internals.

You have to base you whole tune off of what fuel you are using! Each fuel(pump,e85,etc) has its likes and dislikes with the exception of 116, i don't think there are any disadvantages to it.
E85 i really only see cold start and the supposed "goo" on the injectors as disadvantages
Obviously pump doesn't like too much timing.

Yes, thats true with the timing, there is a point of diminished gains when going overboard.

We are getting off topic with this discussion, its not helping the OP out really

Bottom line on 9:1 and pump gas. If he has a stock 1g timing map, he needs something much less aggressive.

Ok, I did my first log the other day. It was running a little lean. I looked at the sheet from when I ordered the chip and either I forgot to specify that I had a 2g maf or he forgot to put it in there. The fuel trims were all ~23% lean all the way through the pull wich would make sense if the 2g maf is not compensated for, and the knock peaked at 22 counts. Im sure being lean is whats causing the knock so im having another chip made and hopefully that takes care of it.
