Do the performance chips work?

If you have an eprom ecu, in order do have someone tune it for you, you have to have a chip made for the eprom ecu. Dsmchips is no longer in business so that out of the question. I would get a dsmlink, and have a shop tune it for you.

Every car is different they cant really make a chip that will be perfect for your car...It might work fine on one and run really rich or lean on another.That being said get something to log with so you can see what is going on with your car.There are alot of other options besides that.Maybe safc,ecmlink,gm maf with maf translator and a wideband.I would shy away from a ''chip''

Keydiver stopped taking new customers so you can take that off your list.

Or do a bit of research and learn to tune. It's a very educating process and is very accomplishing once you begin to understand it. I'd recommend learning to tune before you dive into tuning and trying to pay for people to tune for you.

Yes learning to tune for yourself saves you hundreds of dollars, but you also need a street or county road with NO TRAFFIC or COPS in sight. Thats why a dyno is the way to go sometimes.

Safc first gen you might be able to get for 100 bucks.

You should invest in a good data-logging set up before even thinking of touching the tune with an safc. You have a 1g buy a palm pilot get mmcd and a cable learn how the motor works first and understand what your looking at then get an safc

You already have one? Im gonna be listing an safc 2 in a couple days pm me for details

is there anything that i could buy that allows me to tune my car for under $100?

no. cheapest reliable tuning method I can recommend is:

* eprom programmer (~$80)
* wideband o2/uego sensor ($160)

read up on 1G ecu programming - there's a ton of info on it. use someone else's map that is close to your setup to start with, then borrow a laptop, log your o2s, and adjust from there. make your fuel and boost increments gradually so you don't blow anything up.

you might be able to get by cheaper with a used s-afc2 and a EGT gauge, but if you cannot afford a wideband o2 sensor, then you cannot afford an engine rebuild should you tune your car improperly, and thus you shouldn't be modding your car currently.

This is all assuming the op has an eprom ecu.

Sure, you could just "put a chip in it," but it wouldn't be optimized for YOUR particular car and environment. That's really the whole point of tuning. Anything you buy would only be an approximation at best.

Go do a bunch of reading and research. And set definite goals of what you are trying to accomplish.

I tend to take a somewhat cookbook approach of:

a) Change the hardware to meet goals (i.e.: injectors, intake, exhaust, boost, etc.)

b) Modify the software parameters to accommodate the changes according to calculated values.

c) Measure the results with your logger and other instrumentation.

d) Adjust the software according to measured values observed to improve performance.

e) Repeat steps C & D until you are satisfied with the performance or discover new toys.

** Buying a chip will not get you beyond step B. **

Yes, you can do that on the cheap, but it is VERY time consuming. That's why tools like DSM Link and the Ostrich emulator were invented - they make it much easier and faster to do the last few necessary steps.

The last step of course is to start over at a) and repeat constantly until you run out of money!
