Do RPMS run higher at in a manual, than in an auto?

I recently converted my 99 eclipse from a 4 speed auto, to 5 speed manual, and it seems as if, In 5th gear, going 60 mph, the rpms run 3-400rpm higher than if I was going the same speed in the automatic. should it be like this? or could my tac just be off?

I do have a massive vaccum leak because my IACV is bad, so I had to take a vaccum line off for it to not stall while Idling.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that manuals and automatics have different gears, The auto gears are taller I think.

You're not the first person to suggest this, you're probably right. It just freaked me out because it was running around 3k at 70mph, and I wasn't used to it.

3k at 70
3500 at 80 I think (been a bit since I drove, been rebuilding the engine)

in 5th for me the gauges needles pretty much match

3k would be like 70

2546k rpm is 59mph in 5th gear

To me it sounds like it's too high and that the torque converter isn't locking up for that 300 rpm or so drop.

yes i own both a 5 speed 420a and an auto 420a. the auto has overdrive. the 5 speed doesn't auto @ 70 = 2500 rpms 5 speed @ 70 = 3000 rpms. (about)

you might also want to convert to a 5 speed gauge cluster. the 5 speed gauge cluster doesn't redline till 7k vs the auto at 6500.

im pertty sure in a 5 speed manual trans 5th is a overdrive so is 4th to a point since a transaxle like in any fwd vehicle doesnt have a 1to1 ratio

well overdrive is just a tall gear. 5 speed compared to the auto the 5 speed doesn't have a tall 5th gear.

3rd gear is usually 1 to 1 ratio with higher gears techically being overdrive. So 4th gear in auto's is overdrive but 2g auto's also have lock up torque converters so when driving over 50 mph in 4th gear TQ locks up causing rpms to drop another 300 rpm wich feels like a subtle gear change.

i'm aware of that . i have one. and technically it "feels" like 6 gears. the A604 shifts like this:

1st
2nd
3rd
3rd + tq con. (only noticeable when giving it 50% or more gas)
4th
4th + tq

No that's not right. o/d IS 4th gear. When you disable it with the switch on the gear selector you're dropping down to 3rd gear. So you have 4 gears and a lock-up TQ so it feels sort of like having 5 gears.

wtf do you want me to go make a video to show you? if you watch the tach in an auto, the revs drop 5 times. so counting fist gear that "feels" like 6 gears! i know 4th and 4th + tq con is the OD. but even with OD off the tq will still lock up in 3rd.

There are 4 gears in all 2g Automatics and they have lock up torque converters. If you leave the gear selector in 'D' you go 1-2-3-4 and cruising over 50 mph in 4th gear with steady throttle T/C goes into lock up mode which is sort of but not another gear with rpms dropping 250-300.

Forget overdrive + the overdrive button because all it is is your 4th gear and the button is just a comvenient way to drop from 4th to 3rd gears or to hold it from upshifting to 4th.

Way back 60 years or so overdrive was a big deal and consequently they still talk about overdrive when marketing cars but as far as I know all automatics over the past 15-20 yrs have had an overdrive gear and I'm imagining only 3-spd auto's might not have had one but by '95 every car I know about came with 4-spd automatics.

They still mention power steering + power brakes in advertising too but unless you're over 80 yrs old and senile you know your car is coming with those

My 5-spd manual fwd (1g) runs somewhere around 3k at 70 mph. A 5-spd m/t from a 2g fwd should be very similar so yeah I'd say you're normal.

In my earlier posts I thought you were asking what a 4-sp a/t should be doing and def believe that 2g n/t a/t's should be running 200-300 lower rpms at 70 mph than 5-spd manuals.
