Cause I just can't figure this out. Hopefully you can help assist me.

1996 Eclipse GS 420a 124,000 5spd

Sometimes when I turn on my car the rpms just drop and the car shuts off. However, when I apply gas and raise the rpms the car will run fine. As soon as I begin to drive and then come to a stop, the rpms drop to 0 and the car shuts off. After a little driving and the car beings to warm up, the rpms are good and the car doesnt shut off when I stop. It will hunt for an idle for a tad and then quit. Now this only does it sometimes. I would say 1 out of every 10 or so starts. It has no trend.

Also, my rpms never drop to normal when I drive and put the clutch in. They stay anywhere from 1100 to 1500 until I come to a complete stop. That doesn't make sense to me.

Other than that the car runs fine. Has power, no fuel cut, etc etc.

I have been told that maybe it has to do with my IAC. As far as the car dieing on me sometimes on startup I have canceled out sensors cause they don't start working until the engine is warm. And the ECU is brand new and installed by the dealer about 5-6 months ago. (Due to my CAI rubbing through the wiring harness. Oops!!)

Any suggestions? Anybody? Thanks!!

Regardless, I would bust out your ohm meter and check the sensors as said in a service manual. I would check the IAC(ISC), the coolant temp sensor that deals with cold starts, and the TPS. After you do that let us know the results and we can move from there, knowing for certain if the sensors. Personally, I think it is the IAC(ISC).

I do too actually. I will take a look at it and see what I can find out. Maybe I will start by trying to clean it.

I doubt cleaning will help much, but maybe it would (anythings possible with these cars). If you have the ohm meter and haynes/chilton manual that would be best 1st off cause cleaning a defective unit won't help.:p tell me what you figure out. -james

Can we have a "beating a dead DSM" along with beating a dead horse? ROFL
Though I could never beat it, just every other thing in arms reach :sneaky:

I do believe it has just one. My CAI rubbed through the (brillaint I know) wiring harness of it and I had the dealer put a new one in.

Car did it this morning. It was cold out, but still, it has done it on not so cold times. I think you guys might be on to something with the IAC. I mean, it wants to die and then I rev it and get it to hold. Then when I take off it will die if I stop/let the clutch out. After awhile it will not die but hunt for an idle. When the car is warm it goes away.

Makes me think something is not letting my engine run properly but when it warms up and the computer takes over it adjusts for it. ???

Well here is a pic of it. Maybe it is 2 connectors.
