For some time now I've been hearing this metallic "whooshing" sound from my Talon's front left area while in motion, whether in drive or neutral but never when parked with the engine running. It sounds like sheet metal rubbing on sheet metal, continuously, a bit like the sound of a dust shield rubbing on the rotor.
It's not loud, but you can definitely hear it. It seems to increase in intensity as I accelerate. I knew that it was almost certainly driveline-related, but I wasn't sure if it was the manual trans, which I rebuilt a few years ago, clutch/PP, flywheel, throwout bearing, engine, CV axle, wheel bearing, rotor/pad or even dust shield.
Yesterday I raised the front end to change the oil and coolant, and checked for play in both wheels. The right one was fine, no play up/down and just a little side to side due to the tie rods. The left one had play in both directions, which to me indicated a failing wheel bearing, so I'm going to replace it. But could this also be responsible for the "whooshing" sound? I guess I won't know till I replace it.
Also, if I replace the bearing, the OEM is quite pricey, which along with the 2 seals that need to be replaced comes out to over $160, and I've put a lot of money into restoring this car and can't justify putting more than I need to at this point, financially, especially if something else is causing this bearing to fail as I replaced both a few years ago with Timkens. I can get a new SKF bearing & seals for $50 total. This way if it's not the bearings then I'm only out $50. Are they decent replacements for OEM? And who makes OEM AWD front wheel bearings for a 1G?
