Do 4 bolt axles fit a 3 bolt differential?

My '93 came with 3 bolt axles. Are the 4 bolt and 3 bolt axles the same as far as the number of splines or do I need a 4 bolt differential also? Thanks, mark

go to the 03 forums and ask that  if you were asking about 1gs then no, you have to swap the whole diff out.

John, thanks for pointing out my typo and answering the question. Would you know the reason, such as different splines, larger diameter, etc.
Thanks for being adult about it. Mark

there is a way to have a 4 bolt in a 3 bolt housing (using 4 bolt axles & cups, as well as the LSD) inside of a 3 bolt housing. A lot of the GVR4 guys do it because you have to delete the 4WS otherwise.

I've never heard of a 93 with a 3 bolt, since the 92's and up came with 4's.

I believe '93 was the first year for the 4 bolt but my car was built in October '93 and has a few things that are from the '92 model. mark

92 was the first year for the 4 bolt. Mine is an early 92 and has a 4 bolt stock. Are you sure that it is a 3 bolt? The 4 bolt has smaller diameter axles and they wont interchange with a 4 bolt diff and vice versa.

Yeah, I have a 3-bolt! Have a friend who will sell a 4 bolt but he is in Canada and not sure how customs would work. mark

You may wanna get a vehicle history report on ## car.. It was either wrecked from the rear, or the person you got it from knew what it was and took the rearend out of it. My early 92 was a 6/4 combo

Someone has definately swapped it. I have never heard of a 92 or newer that came with a 3 bolt rear. The 4 bolt came in all of the 1gb cars. If it didnt have popups, it had a 4 bolt rear.

Probably someone who parted their entire car out and then decided to throw the 3-bolt in to sell it as a running car.

Irregardless the reason that's why I'm looking for a 4 bolt but don't know what the going rate is. Anyone? Thanks, Mark

maybe the housing or something of the 4 bolt leaked... Maybe thats why you have a 3 bolt on there. Also if that is the case maybe whoever did that put the 4 bolt internals in the 3 bolt...

Before you flame me for asking, I really have searched far and wide for the answer to this question.

My 1991 Talon AWD 5-speed has a 3-bolt LSD rear end and I want to upgrade to a 4-bolt LSD rear end. I know I need the diff housing with all the internal parts, the propeller shafts, and the axle cups from a 92-94 5-speed.. But I'm a not a "junk yard parts" kinda guy; I really want to get OEM new or re-manufactured stuff.

Has anyone compiled a complete list of the Mitsubishi part numbers it takes to do the job? Does anyone know a rebuilder that sells a "kit" of sorts? I'm not afraid of spending the money on quality.

Regards,

Brad
