How do I remove shifter cables at the points pictured below? I've tugged, pulled, jinked, ripped, and twisted to no avail. I don't see any sort of fastener there so I'm totally in the dark about this one.

It looks like they have clips that hold them in place. The clips are basically shaped like a U. They would be upside down U's right now. You have to pull them up which can be a pain. You can try a flat head under them on each side and prying up. This is how I remove most clips like that. Or you can put the flat head at the lip that is on the top and hit the screw driver with a hammer. Once the clips are out the cables should move towards the front of the car and then up.

Thanks for the fast replies.

Looks like I have out-n00bed myself once again. I pulled extra hard on the two bronze colored tabs and they slid off (with a bit of a fight and some WD-40).

Ok I'm doing the same thing here and i got stuck when i was trying to get those out, did the wd40 work?I tried the flat head and i couldn't move it very much. very very difficult to move. currently my cables are being held together by a hose clamp, it works but not the ideal way of fixing this.

To get those clips out I prefer using vice grips to grab the clips and wiggling and tugging the vice grips to get them out.
