Here is a quick list of dirt cheap mods for the 2g guys that don't want to jump head first into building or are just too cheap and don't want to search. I take no responsibility if you somehow blow up your car. Please note that prices listed are what I've found on a quick search and may differ for you.
First MOD is always Maintenance!
It does no good to add mods to a DSM with problems. It will only make this worse.
INTAKE:
Cheap EBAY Cone filter and adapter: $20
More air to enter the engine. Be advised a cheap filter will allow larger dust particles to also enter the engine!
Modified Stock intake tube: $5
Remove the intake tube from the turbo.(due this when you change the air filter)
First remove the dump tube, that little this the By pass valve (BOV) connects to. Try not to break this or the cost of this mod will increase. If you do break it, go to the Hardware store and buy some PVC piping, or even better a metal one. Cut the tube to fit and reinstall using some JBWeld to seal it.
Cut the BOV dump tube
Second, smooth the stock intake out. You'll need an 8 inch piece of 2 1/4 exhasut piping, 2 semi large worm ring clamps, and black spray paint. Cut it at the 2nd rib from the top and the 2nd rib from the bottom. Paint the exhaust pipe (Let it dry), insert the top and bottom intake, and worm clamp it down. Install and adjust to length!

TURBO:
BCS restrictor removal:free
Remove the BCS from the car, Find a small screw and gently turn it in until it catches the restrictor. Do not turn it to hard or you will brake the nipple off and be in trouble. Lightly pull the restrictor out. Reconnect and enjoy the 1-2 psi increase!
BCS
INTERCOOLER:
Clean the Intercooler:free
Remove intercooler. Use a simple green or gasoline, pour into the intercooler, shake it around, and dispose of it properly!Let it dry out completely.
Intercooler Cleaning
Open up the Fender Liner:free
Use a Dremel to open up the vents in the fender liner behind the intercooler or cut it completly out and replace with mesh.
Liner MOD
UICP Mod:$20
The biggest problem with the stock UICP is the small area where the stock air box was. An Aftermarket UICP will run you about $100, or you could mod your stock one. Cut the stock tube just after the crushed section and replace it with a 2 1/4 silicone coupler and worm clamp it down. Be sure to add a lip on the UICP, you can use a bead of JB Weld around the edge. This is will ensure it doesn't blow off during boost.
BOV:$20
The stock 2g BOV leaks at low boost, as low as stock levels. So replace it with either a 1g and adapter or you can find an Evo 8 BOV for cheaper. These are less prone to leaking at boost.
Throttle body:free
Clean your throttlebody plate!!!
TB Cleaning
Anytime you mess with the intercooler piping or intake track you need to do a Leak Test.
When you decide spend the money, follow the guide.
