Today I was cruising down the road and I was in 3rd gear get into a little boost not hardly any at all and then I start smelling oil really bad. Then keep smelling it so I'm like oh crap thats gotta be my car. So I pull over and pop my hood the whole left side of the engine bay (battery side) is covered in oil. There is oil everywhere mostly puddled on the tranny. I look under the car and prolly about a quart or so is on the ground. So I checked my oil and there is still oil on the dipstick. The car idled just fine and it would move in 1st and reverse I didn't try to drive it and got a rollback to the house. What could this be? One of my buddies thinks i busted the center diff? I have no idea what it is please help!

First off was it gear oil or motor oil?

If it was gear oil, check where the axles mate to the transmission. Maybe if you are lucky you only broke a seal there.

Usually when things go bad in your transmission, they usually stay in your transmission. If you cracked the bell housing, you can't even use it as a core at a transmission shop.

It appeared to be engine oil because when I checked my dipstick it was like probably 1.5 Quarts low and I checked it that afternoon. I'm goin to jack it up and break it down tommorow hopefully I'll find something

Alright, well I'd make sure you have enough oil in your pan and have someone crank it over while you watch the engine bay. Any leak that would cause that much oil loss will become evident pretty quick.
