Different Size MAS? 2g

I have a 2g talon, I took out the honeycombs from my MAS and destroyed them. I bought a MAS off the trader, and noticed that my current MAS is larger than the one I received... The two have the same size inlets and outlets it appears, just the square section of the mas is bigger on one. Will either work? I will set this aside and keep working on other stuff until one of you guys is kind enough to help me out on this one. thanks :thumb:
 
The one with the Injen sticker was the original MAS in my car. It wouldn't have anything to do with an eprom chip or any of that would it? I really know nothing about that stuff.. just a wild guess?

The one you bought is a stock MAS, and the one with the Injen sticker is noticably larger, and will most likely flow more air.
 
I looked at the pic again, now i feel dumb. I didn't look close enough at it, or maybe the size of the opening messed up my perception, but yeah, they look about the same size. i'm curious though now, why is it so much larger overall than a stock one? and were the honeycombs in the one with the Injen sticker on it the same as the stock one?
 
look at the length of the square section on each. you will notice the injen is about an inch longer. Did the 95's have anything different than the other years? maybe the guy who sold it messed up and sold me a first gen (the smaller one)?
 
the one you got is a 2g MAS. I'm not sure where the Injen one came from, I've never seen one like that before. I'm wondering why there isnt a center honeycomb in that one with the Injen sticker on it. Did you remove that one too?

You pointed out what everyone before you had said, it's a 2g MAS.

Notice that I used the word "trying", meaning attempting using what knowledge I have in this sublect. Whether or not it was successful or not is irrelevant to my word chouce, but I did make an attempt, and apparently it failed. I would like to, however, ask how you helped him, regarding your previous post.

Now, back to an attempt to provide assistance in this matter, the new MAS should work, just leave the center section of the honeycomb in it. I wish I hadn't destroyed the bottom and side honeycombs in mine, because I didn't think it would idle as rough as it is now.
 
I get a gasoline smell in the car too now.. From reading posts this is common with the honeycombs removed -- some guys are amazed my car runs with the honeycombs all out. I'm still curious the difference though.. im going to see if I can take out the honeycombs and just put them in my original MAS.
 
I see what you're saying with the one being larger than the other. as stated in the original post, you took all the honeycombs out, therefor the one with the Injen sticker is your original, and the one with all the honeycombs is the new one you got from some dude, which you're asking why the new one is smaller. doesn't seem like anyone really understood what was going on. I can see that the "new" one is quite a bit smaller, if you look at the square top portion of it, the new one is square and your original is more rectangular. Hope thats clear :)
My 95 gsx is like the new one you got, the square one with all the honeycombs. Don't know if that helps you at all, but its *something*
 
The stickered one is ...well i dunno what thats off. The new one you got is correct though.
 
since we used to use the FIPK from the 3/s I wonder if that is not a MAF from one of those cars?

The new one IS a 2g... use it.

the other one most likely is from a 3/s
 
well the injen stickered one (the original) is off my car.. thanks for clearing that up a couple posts above. I bought the car bone stock, so it is highly unlikely that the original owner decided for some reason to switch it out to something else.

Still puzzled what it could be.. where there any differences between the 95 MAS and 96+ MAS? I know the cars are identical but i thought i heard something where the ECU or MAS was different in some of the 95's. thanks for all your replys.
 
The bigger MAS box was for the 95's, it's no different, they just streamlined it later.
Kind of like how you see those computers from the 1970's that take up a whole wall.

ah, that was exactly what I was looking for. thanks for all your responses. this new mas should free up an inch or so for the filter to be installed / taken out easier. thanks again.
