Ok can someone help me to understand these dowel pins. When you pull the tranny do these fall out or something or do they stick in the block or tranny. I don't remembe rany dowel pins i just remember alot of bolts that go all around the bell housing and into the block.

There are TWO dowel pins that go into the block (or tranny i guess) on the LEFT and RIGHT side of the block or bellhousing. these make it so the tranny is perfectly aligned and so no error can really occur with misaligning. I now have a southbend clutch DXD and the tranny is in with both dowel pins in. Im HOPING this is the LAST time i have to do this.

If you pull the tranny this is what you will see. The white circles are what I am talking about. The normally stick into the block, but when the tranny comes out from the bottom or back in from the bottom, they can become dislodged or knocked out. Alot or people including myself, dealerships and/or tuner shops, either didn't relize they were missing or just didn't care, thinking that thier purpose was usless. I made this mistake, BAD MISTAKE. I had to pull them out a spare engine I had. And it took alot of muscle to get them out. So don't lose them!!!!

I just wanna thank laserspeeddemon for the heads up on vendors-reviewed, as well as everyone who has provided insight to this matter. Probably not only saved me a ton of hassle and wasted cash but a lot of others who have not replied. I have since sent my car to have an ACT 2600 installed and have printed out your reviews for my Mechanic.

Again thank you very much!! :dsm:

Well my car is fixed from the horrible metal on metal sound I mentioned in a post earlier. It happened to be a bolt backed out from that plate that bolts onto the clutch, there are like two bolts. one backed out and got lodged in the flywheel. my downpins were also there and my 2600 looks like new :)

I'm pretty sure from everything that laserspeeddemon posted that it is an install error. Without those two dowel pins there is a chance that the transmission could get unaligned while reinstalling it and that could cause trouble.

I put over 2,000 miles on my clutch already and there are no signs of anything getting ready to break.

Well I got my new clutch in, with maybe 300 mi, and 0 hard launches. I am deathly afraid to drive this car now, it is constantly breaking. So I can't really comment on it right now. But I will update this in the future.

well hopefully everything will be fine with your car.....but damn dude if your scared to drive the car then why bother? just sell it and get something newer... :thumb:

Ive had a act 2600 from the beginning of owning my talon almost, and I would agree its the best mod to my car I have done the entire time. I had a professional DSM guy install it (Lucas English, English Racing) and I have had it for about 8 or 9k miles and I love it, I would never get anything other than ACT for my next DSM. :thumb:

I have been reading these threads praying this didnt happen to me. Well as of 2 nights ago. Guess what???? The crazy thing is mine is making a chatter when the clutch is pressed in. Kinda backwards to what everyone else is saying. Ive never heard of this problem. Has anyone else? Makes no chatter when the clutch pedel is released..(shrugs) BTW this is on my AWD and the clutch is about a 10 month old 2600.

Well, after a year and a half, 200 passes, and probably 30,000 miles, it took some 3rd gear AWD doughnuts to do this. I definitely feel I got my money's worth out of it though. For reference, this was an ACT 2600 in a 1992 AWD, using a Mitsu 2G disc.

I like how this thread has no "No, my ACT clutch has done it's damn job" choice.

ACT 2100 pp, street disc, xact flywheel, used the tob act gave me (they started selling the good ones) on a 98 GS-T for about 5k miles now.

Installed properly by myself, Rob (pimpngear) and Liam (ldstang50). Broken in properly.

Estimated 30 passes at the strip this season. No Failure. I don't care what they say it handles at the flywheel, I made 333 foot lbs at the wheels when I dynoed so you can do the math.

That was on the evo 16g, I have a 60 trim that is on the car and that's what I'll be running next season. I don't expect to have to replace the clutch until the end of next year, but we'll see. It helps that I don't beat the shit out of my car...3k rpm shifts unless there is a chick in the car and then I wind it all the way up to 4k. Totally a daily driven car too, 40k miles in the 19 months I've owned it.

yeah but notice 99% of the guys with problems are the awd guys. i also have a act 2100 and have had no problems and i dont expect any to arise. i think the awd failures are due to a combination of a bad batch of discs and incorrect installation procedures.

FWD and AWD clutches are identical and interchangable.

FWD and AWD flywheels are not.

actually I've used a FWD flywheel on an AWD. I just drilled a small hole where the dowel pin for the flywheel was. it worked fine.

AWD trannies put way more punishment on the clutch then FWD, so you could see why they problem is more common on AWD.

I have a 1994 GS (FWD Non-Turbo). I installed the ACT 2100 about 2500 miles ago, and I have the rattling noise as well. I called ACT and told them the springs came out of the disk and they were quick to say I was SOL (in more politically correct terms of course). All the dowl pins were there when I put the clutch in, so I don't know what the problem is. I called SPEC and they said it could be anything causing misalignment, he said bad motor mounts, cracked bell housing, input shaft play, ETC. All the motor mounts are new Poly, The tranny is pretty new, no cracks, and no play. ACT refused to offer any kind of reimbursement for the disk. If i send it back they said they would send me a new one....hmmm....take the sh1t out because it fell apart, and replace it with the same sh1t so I can do the job again in another 3k miles? I will never purchase another ACT product again. They can go fornicate themselves with an iron stick. I'm going to put in a stock mitsu disk and hope for the best. :thumbdown

i know its an installation error, but has anyone experienced these problems with a centerforce clutch?

ACT 2100 w/ street disc and brand new OEM flywheel(not resurfaced). 400 miles during break in and driving like a grandma....I was on a long distance ride home(not really about 60 miles or 1 hour) to VA from MD. The check engine light comes on and the clutch starts slipping. I almost cried. Anyways I'm probably going to try something else real soon... :barf:

well my first clutch (AWD ACT 2600) lasted until i chipped a valve which was 8k miles after the clutch install. i wish i had pictures of it but it looks like all the other rallied out clutches.

since doing the SBR 6 bolt swap with a an act AWD flywheel and act 2600lb (again) i have put 600mi on the car. it is still holding up as i made sure that both dowel pins were used. so we will see...

does this happen on the 6 puck discs or just the street discs, i knwo its a dumb question as the 6 puck has no springs. anyoen had problems with these

well i guess i can finaly chime in on this..... my clutch was making a weird noise at idle... then slowly it started to give me problems shifting.. then finaly i had to punch the shifter to get it in gear....

well got the trans out today... nothing unusualy...... took the pressure plate off, and guess what i found? A freaking tamberine(spelling?).. one clutch spring was broke, and all the others were soooooo lose, its amazing they didnt fall out...

screw ACT... im gonna look into the SBR clutch now.

I went with a Exedy just because of all these horror stories, even though I know alot of people with ACT's and no problems.
