Did some "polishing " you could say (motor pics)

I just painted my valve cover today, and the heat shield. I didn't put it on yet cause I want the vc to dry as much as possible, I will take pics with it on tomorrow.

When I was finished with the heatshield, it looked brand new, as for the vc I like the way it came out. In the pics it looks kind of green but the paint color is Cast Coat Iron.

Here is my issue. My dad has a bench grinder in the garage. I hear alot of people use this to get some nice polish jobs done. How do I go about polishing my valve cover with the bench grinder and some sand paper. I dont have a dremel nor can I get one at the moment, I just have the grinder and sandpaper. So my question is, how do I do it? Do I hold the cover up to the wheels and move it back and forth? or is there a more logical way to go about doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated........... :thumb:

hey man get a buffer on that thing in your garage and that might work also just go oevr your valve cover with the steel wool (grocery store) andyou will notice results immediately but after like a couple of hours you will be awazed

also 2gentsi your stuff looks good man and yeah it looks green but i believe you :p :dsm:

I was planning on polishing my letters too but I didn't want to bother masking it out because that would've taken a bit of time. I decided to to just sand it out after painting it but it ended up not really working so I just repainted over the letters. It's funny cause I have a whole bag of steel wool that I saw while trying to do the lettering but I didn't think it would work. Eh maybe I'll use that on something else, if I find anything.

Oh yeah on the center part of my vc I used Dupli-Color Aluminum High Heat. I have a pic of it with the masking off and the rest of the vc unpainted still. I'm not sure what the paint will look like on the rest of the vc though because I think the texture is different.

*EDIT* The Dupli-color Aluminum is the paint I used on the heathshield as well if anyone is curious. I used some sandpaper to give it some texture to adhere to, just some scuffing don't put too much work into it. Then went ahead and gave it one coat on the outside of it (nobody will see the other side of it anyways so why bother) let it dry for about 10min and put it back on.

Sorry about the flash on the bottom pic, the camera doesn't seem to have an option to turn flash off. It doesn't have auto-focus either...

For everyone doing their heat shield, they're real pretty but the side you want polished is the side facing the heat. The side you see should be black.

Well, that's for use as a heat shield instead of a blingy-blingy thing.

I'm loving the new polished look to your engine bay :thumb: Keep on adding that shine to various parts inside The Bay until everything is at maximum bling factor! *drool*

polished engine bays > all

im sure you have a drill in your house right? you can find a bit that will fit onto a drill and its just a round piece of steel wool i polished my heat shield with it a while ago. comes out really nice and it takes like 5 min not even, then just go over by hand and its perfect

Yeah we have a few drills, drill bits, a huge compressor, a bench grinder. Im sure I have everything I need to create a good quality polish job, I just dont know how to begin or what exactly to use. Can I use my dad's drill and attach a wool bit to it to do my valve cover? I know I'll need some Mothers Polish and maybe some sandpaper, but that I can easily go out and purchase. Thanks :thumb:

I went into the garage, I also found a die grinder with a whole bunch of different bits. All different grits and some that have alot of long and tiny wire hairs. So I think I have everything I need. Just need a pretty basic step by step process with any of the tools that I have (not too detailed cause I understand the basics).

umm i guess just go at it now with the steel wool and antthing else you think will grind it down. no steps really.......then use polish when your done and repeat :thumb: hows it comming ?>?>?

alright I put the new gasket on and installed the vc, I think I might buy a polished oil cap :shhh:. It will look better with the vc, probably be some non-brand though. I'm hoping that my oil won't leak anymore because I noticed when I took off the vc that the oil was coming from the half-moon gasket and the intake side next to the sprocket. Well here are the pics.

Alright man, I went at it with the tools I had and it looks good. My only issue is I cant get it mirror chrome. If you look at my Greddy IC Pipes in my gallery, my valve cover is about that shiny. How do I get it straight chrome? Do I need to keep sanding? At what point do I use the Mothers Chrome Polish? I cant find my charger for my digi cam so i cant post pics at the moment.

I take that back, its a little shinier than my IC pipes. (I just looked at the pic in my gallery and the IC pipe looks the same shade as my stock valve cover) It reflects the sun pretty good but I want BLING BLING Chrome. What do I need to do?

Actually thats a good idea but no I didn't paint it, I just got a wire wheel and used that. Shit I've been going crazy with paint. I usually don't paint anything but now since I'm waiting for the little rtv I put on the vc, I'm just painting. I took off both wipers and the trim under it about to paint if satin black. When I can get into the garage I wanna do the lower door trim and the trim in the grill in front of the radiator.
