I have a 2nd gen gsx with basic mods,(intake, turboback exhaust, intercooler piping and bov). Boost always spikes up to 17psi then falls down to 15 and stays steady there. Last night at the track when I launched the car bogged big time. It felt like I tried launching in third insted of first. Thats what I thought I did at first. The car was barely moving and was making a lugging noise like if you were in too high of a gear. Then all of a sudden it was fine and the car took off like it always does. After that run i parked the car and called it a night. Then when I left an hour later the car runs fine but theres no boost. Nothing. You stomp the gas and the boost gauge goes up to 5psi. No swooshing intake noise, no bov noise. Its like my car is suddenly a non turbo. Its running fine. I drove it home last night and to work this morning and everythings fine just no boost. Anyone have any idea's? Im kinda new at this and really dont know where to start. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.

Take off the intake to the turbo. That way you can see into the compressor wheel of the turbo. Make sure there are no damamged fins and try moving the bolt in the center around. If it moves alot or there is lots of fin damage time for a new turbo.

Is it ok to drive around with a damaged turbo until I can get a new one? It wont hurt anything will it?

As long as your not boosting.

When I blew my turbo, I could still drive. Though I had to drain almost a qt of oil out of my intercooler. It was funny when I would WOT, it would blow so much black smoke out the back that you couldn't see behind you. It was like SPY HUNTER

That's how mine is right now.

I dont have to worry about boosting. It wont boost at all. The boost gauge jumps from vacuum to 0 and thats it. Im not seeing any smoke though. There was some when it first went but thats it.

i wonder if my turbo is going, its a 98 GSX w/ 77k when i changed to greddy IC pipes i tried what u guys said i put my finger in the center bolt and it moved a tad, not too much though, what do think

Well like a lot of turbos, it probably has a little shaft play. But since it does have a little, it's going to die sooner or later most likely. As long as it is spooling ok and you don't hear the fins hitting the compressor housing (might sound like a supercharger whining), it's probably OK for now. If it's a T-25, just hope it dies and buy something bigger ;)

I thought a 'bit' of shaft play was ok, but apparantly it's not.

If you can take off the intake, and touch the wheel, try to move it. It shouldn't move at all. Ie, If you can feel it move in/out it's probably busted. (Side to side is ok a bit).

I just changed a turbo that moved 'a bit' ie, just a tiny tiny bit, but the turbo was cooked.

So, pulled it out, put in the new turbo, NO shaft play, ie, doesn't even tick and it's good now.

Also, you can try to run the car w/ intake off (it'll probably sputter and die), but you'll know straight away when smoke starts to pour out :)

Thats funny that you should say it sounds like a supercharger whining, Slice. Thats exactly what mine sounds like. Now I dont know whether to throw a T-28 in there for the time being or just go all out and get a T3/T4 and all the supporting mods all at once.

If my t-25 dies, can I just get a 14b, would it just go right in its place? That's all I would really want to do, how easy is this, and with a 14b going in its place, do I need any other mods to go with it? Or is it just as simple as switching them out

Its not that easy. the compresser outlet is different so you will need one from 1g turbo the oil feed line is different, the oil return line is different the water lines are bent different but you still can use your t-25 water lines with a little tweaking. The supporting mods need to be done if you want to run higher than stock boost (fuel pump exhaust) Its not really that fun to do I'm running a evo III which is also a mitsubishi turbo and you have to go through the same things to put it in.

What BOV do you have? I had a problem similar to this problem happen, no boost, the car felt slow as hell, and no smoke. It turned out my Turbo-XS BOV was stuck open...I don't know what your BOV is, but if your turbo is fine, I'd check that.
