Did I break it?

Hey,
I'm not sure if this if the right board but I'm hoping one of you can assist. I am replacing the timing belt on a 2000 Eclipse GT 3.0. I had everything lined up TDC and was putting the new belt on when the rear cam (firewall side) slipped and rolled about 1/8 -1/4 turn clockwise. I heard a clap when it did but don't know if it was just a "normal" sound, or the sound of a valve smacking a piston. What is the likelyhood that I broke something when that happened and is there any way to tell short of pulling the rear head? Any advice or pointers on a better place to ask would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Take out the plugs and rotate by hand, if its smooth than check compression. If compression is good than you should be golden. To truely know though, you'll need to visually inspect it, but there wasn't much force present to really bend anything, I don't think.

I had this happen to and mine was fine. I don't think the force from it rotating like that is strong enough to bend a valve. I think you should be good.

Agreed. I seriously doubt you hurt anything. Just make sure its in time before you tighten everything up and crank it. The valve springs alone aren't really strong enough to do any damage like that, even if there was some valve to piston contact.

That's what I was hoping to hear. I'll check the compression on it just to make sure. Thanks for the quick replies!! I'll let you know how it turns out.
