I don't post often on this site but more of lurk and search things but I'd like to have a bigger insight to this.

Alright, so I pulled my engine due to low compression on all cyls, burning of a lot of oil, and various other non engine related problems. I'm pretty sure my valve seals/guides were bad in the head and my rings were possibly worn due to the high mileage and large neglect from the p.o :(

I have a '93 and when I took off my clutch I found out that I have a six bolt. I'm trying to figure out what would be best for me to do at this point.

I thought I'd scrap my old engine and save it for a rebuild next year for my friend's gvr4. I found a rebuilt 7bolt shortblock that's fresh from the machine shop, standard bore, new bearings, freeze plugs, freshly honed, evo 9 pistons and rods, and oem rings for $600. Along with that shortblock I'd purchase a clean 1g 7 bolt head for $80 with new valve seals.

Would buying that shortblock be cheaper than having my 6 bolt rebuilt with basically the same specs(evo 9 pistons/rods) or is that $600 shortblock a good deal?

My goals are only to go 16g or 20g eventually so no crazy build here necessary.

Please let me know what ya'll think..
Thanks

I would build my own engine personally just to have the piece of mind that it was done correctly. The deal you are talking about sounds good though if you absolutely trust whoever is selling it did it correctly.

Yeah, rebuild that engine.

1 : It's a 6 Bolt. Those are really the key jewels of our vehicles and what's even better is you can wipe the thought of crankwalk out of you mind, as uncommon as that is.
2 : You'll get experience. You never really appreciate a car until you have to put sweat and blood into it. A rebuild isn't very hard and you can modify things as you go.

Don't cop out, do it yourself and feel better once it's done.

$600 is a great deal for that short block especially if you can get a warranty. It's tough to find a machine shop that is familiar with these engines and / or have a torque plate for one to bore it properly (if it needs it). Also, rebuilding a high performance turbo engine isn't exactly something that is easy or can be rushed. If it was me, I would go for the short block.

Rebuild it, go with a 2.4L and you'll have some wicked fast spool on a 16G -20G.

I agree with posts 2, 3 and 5. There's nothing like doing something yourself, and as you've already found out, there's peace-of-mind in it as well(or atleast you don't have to worry about those who-did-what, finger pointing situations).

I say keep and build it. It might be agrivating at times, but in the end I think it'd be well worth it.

Rebuild it. Youre leaving out the wiring changes from 6 to 7 bolt. Which would be a big PITA. And if you want to keep the old 6 bolt for a future swap, there would be no point is swapping from 6 bolt to 7 bolt and eventually back to 6 bold.

I bought the 7 bolt shortblock.

I'm not putting the 6 bolt back into my car, it's going into my friend's gvr4 next summer.
I have a '93, so someone rewired it for a 6bolt when they put that in? What wiring differences are you talking about? Thanks.

while you lurk and search the site, how many times you read of people swaping 6 bolts for 7 bolts? rebuild yours, u might spend little more than 600 but ull know what you have.

I know what I have, it's just a shortblock, not much that I can't see. I'm also rechecking the bearing clearances, crankshaft endplay, etc. I'm going to make sure it's all good, so no need to worry about not knowing what I have in it.
