1g/4-bolt/welded diff

Hey guys,

Need a little guidance here. I am having a very loud clacking sound on deceleration. I believe it is/was coming from the rear end (4-bolt).

I have removed the rear end and re shimmed it to remove almost all the backlash. However, the sound persists. There still seems to be a good amount play in the propeller shaft so I am thinking of going into the x-fer case next.

Tranny is a new shep rebuild with less than 500 miles on it, so I doubt any backlash issues would be in there.

When the sound is present, it sounds as if something heavy is beating on the bottom of the car in the generally area of the back seats. This sound almost always occurs when decelerating in higher rpms. It can also occur when there is an off/on load condition such as steady cruising. At highway speeds there is also a vibration associated with this noise.

The carrier bearings are less than 1 year old and I have replaced the rubber isolators for them last month.

Any ideas guys?

James

What mounts? It's hard mounted to the sub frame. Do you mean the sub frame bushings?

I don't see anything physically wrong with the rear. I did not however, dismantle the lsd diff. I simply removed it and shimmed it. Maybe I should dismantle that as well and have a look.
