Hey guy's I just bought a datalogger that has 2 program's installed MMcD and Palm'n'stein witch one should i use to log my 91 gsx?? What are the main things i should log?? Sorry new to the datalogger's!!

I've got a 2g, but it sounds like more folks like MMCd than Palm'n'stein.

Log rpm, knock, idc, and front O2v.

RPM tells you where you are in the pull.
Knock tells you the knock count.
IDC is the injector duty cycle. This'll tell you if you're maxing out your injectors.
O2v tells you if you're running too lean.

Find a secluded flat or uphill stretch of straight road and do a 3rd gear pull. Start at 2k rpm and go to redline. Note that 3rd gear at redline is faster than any speed limit in the US, so do this at your own risk. Log starting before you tromp the gas. Stop logging after you get off the gas.

You might also want to log TPS (throttle position sensor) during one of your first pulls to see if you're actually getting full throttle. On a 2g, the ECU controls the motor differently when it detects full throttle.

Search and read the tech articles for more information on what you should look out for, what's a bad number, what's a good number, etc. It's all been covered numerous times before.

Good luck!

I would use MMCD, its easier to use. When you log, you will want to log RPM, Knock, IDC (injector duty cycle), and O2V. You can log others, but it will slow down your samples/sec, and you will recieve less data. These are the most vital things you can log, because you can watch if you are running lean, knocking, or if you are maxing out your injectors.

thanxs guy's for the help I will check it out tomorrow and let you know how it goes!! I just got my car back together! The car smoke's im thinking due to bad valve seals! Do u guys know of any way to help reduce the amount of blue smoke if it the seals???

UPDATE: Tonight I ran the car after the tear down. I installed the logger and found out a couple things!
1. My TPS at WOT only read's 74 percent!
2. KNOCK while crusing was around 15 and at WOT I saw around 43 count's or so!!! Could my knock sensor be back?
3. My timing showed at idle around 1000 rpms showed 14 advanced?? Could this be why i have a little missfire?

ALSO did a compression test!!
1, 155
2, 145
3, 145
4, 145
Did a wet test on last cylinder and went up to almost 175 180!!!!!

Car boost so much faster right around 3200 rpm's then before! When i took off the turbo i noticed the wastgate flapper was all bent and wasn't closing the hole!! fixed it boost way better!!!

Well, for your throttle, I would do a simple test to make sure your throttle is actually opening 100 percent and that it is actually the sensor. Sit in your car (car off) and go wot. Just have someone put their hand on the throttle cable bracket and see if they push it any more. It could very simply be that your cable is loose and needs adjustment. Otherwise, it is most likely your tps or maybe the wiring is bad? I'm not too sure about this, i have not had to mess with my tps yet.

As for the knock, you could have two possible things. One, your car is actually knocking for which you can do a quick search to find some possible solutions. Secondly, it could be phantom knock. I had quite a severe problem (there's a fairly large thread about it on dsmtalk) with PK where my car would lose all power in a gear (knock count would peg at 43) until I got off the throttle. If you got off the throttle and back on everything would be ok, no knock. Easiest way to figure it out (in my opinion) would be to do what i did and put in very high octane gas. I let my tank get very low (less than 1/8) and then bought half a tank of 100 octane unleaded gas at my local trac. My car being fairly stock, there was no reason for it to knock that much. When I logged some runs with my friend's logger we saw that it was still getting the same 43 counts of knock so it was almost definitively proven to be pk.

As a side note, I (somehow) fixed the problem by replacing the plugs, wires, fuel filter, and doing some general maintenance. There is no proven way to get rid of PK (other than if your knock sensor is bad then the solution is obvious), you just basically have to try alot of different things until you find what works for you.

As for your compression test, you can't expect a 16 year old car to have rings in perfect condition. Your compression numbers aren't THAT bad, you should be ok as long as your car is acting fine. Then again, i'm a noob so don't mind me :D

I'm not familiar with MMCd, but I'd guess that O2-R is the rear (post-cat) sensor, and O2-F is the front O2 sensor. You want the front O2 sensor.

Just to clairify, MMCd is backwards for some stupid reason. O2-R is actually the front O2 sensor, while O2-F is going to give you some random voltage that doesn't mean anything.

A 1g should only read 1 o2 sensor, they don't have a second.

Knock at criuse is possibly an indicator of "PK"

Do your lifters tick a lot above idle? That may be one source of "PK".

I figured one of you wisemen would have caught that.;)

It seems to have no knock when more timing is advanced! And more knock at less timing!
EX: on my 3rd gear pull at WOT I got:

RPM:5656 INJD:56.2%
Knock:42 TIMA: 12*
02-R:0.95V

I have a 3rd gear full from my datalogger but not sure how to put it on the computer! Any idea's how to put it on my computer?????? I am using mmcd program.

That knock is crazy. OMG I would check your knock sensor for the infamous "goo" leakage.

As for transferring logs to the PC, I can't help you there. I've never used MMCd, only the pocketlogger software.

Check your knock sensor for "goo leakage" as Nathan suggested, but also make sure you have MMCd set-up correctly. When the software is 1st loaded onto the Palm the default settings are for the 3000GT/Stealth cars (that's what the program was originally designed for). Go into the preferences section & make sure you switch that to "DSM". If not, none of your numbers are valid. Also, check to see if you have version 1.8g which is the most recent.

As for getting the logs onto your computer, do you have MMCd Tools? This is a small exporting program that will export the files from the Palm to your PC when you Hot Sync. It will export them as .xls (MS Excel files) & .csv files. Then you can view them in MS Excel if you have it or in a CSV Viewer. :thumb:

Bling5tatus: Im not sure it my timing is right but i really dont think so cus at idle it sounds like it misfires alittle bit and on that datalogger it showes at 812 rpms it shows around 10 digree's advanced!

I will check my knock sensor tommorrow to see if it has goo around it! Correct me if im wrong but isn't the knock sensor located on the back of the block under the head right?

I install MMCD TOOLS yesterday and after i installed it hook up my logger to the computer and nothing happens to my computer! Isn't somthing suppose to pop up after i try to hotsync using..... local then Cradle/cable!! and says it cant connect for some reason!??????

I just checked and im running V. 1.5d it says!
Were can i download the newest version???
