Dash lights on, head lights stop working, could it be Alternator ?

Kay so i started my car up this morning and as i was backing out of my driveway the "Battery light" and the "Brake light" both came on in the dash, i kept driving to see if they would go off but nothing, i stopped at the red light and they did, but as soon as i started going again they came right back on. Also when i had my head lights on, once i got past 20-25 MPH they would die out, i slowed down and bam they come back on, any ideas on whats happening ?

I had the same symptoms when my voltage regulator fried a few months back. Replaced the alternator and all is well again.

did you get a higher out put alternator or the stock one again ?

I was in a bind so I just replaced it with a stock output one as there was only one parts store open and it's all they had (I needed the car running that night). Normally I would take the opportunity to upgrade though...

i think i might, because i have some audio junk in the hatch with an in dash also probley draws alot of power but thanks man, at least now i know whats gota be fixed

No problem. Don't forget you can always pull the alternator off first and have it bench tested at the parts store to be sure it's bad (assuming you have a second car to get you there). It will also save you a trip back later as they can give you the refund for the core right there when you buy the new one. I'm usually anal and have them bench test the new one too before taking it home. Just added QA so you can be sure you didn't get a bad one.

my dash lights only work when im on the gas as soon as i let off they go out or extrmley dim i did the LED conversion to my cluster and it still does the same thing, just figured i will wait till it goes out or theres a short in my cluster idk . ## sounds like u need a new alternator take it to autozone to get it tested.

people have been telling me to start it up then disconnect the positive cable on the battery and if it keeps running then it should be the battery if not the alt, but I think the bench test might be safer .

Sounds like the battery is dieing and the lights are only getting power when you give the gas and start charging everything up, I'm no pro thou so I'm not 100% sure but that's my guess.

Ill hook it to the trickle when I get it off stands we will se what happens. But it starts fine. And yes bench test it. Other then that it can cause a voltage spike and fry ## ecu. Has happened to me before.

Yeah, never do the cable disconnect while the car is running. You run a high risk of a voltage spike, which would obviously do more harm than good.

I had that same problem this month it was my alternator and battery, I changed it and everything was good my guess is you need an alternator and battery.

havent been on in a wile but i did fix it turned out the alt was over chargeing my battery, voltige regulater failed, new alt and all is good! so thanks for all the help guys!
